BNS Events & Clinics
Upcoming Clinics & Special Events
Group Skiing

BNS offers weekly clinics and presentations about cross-country skiing every Thursday night from 6-8PM.  Clinics begin with a short presentation followed by an open wax night with benches and Nordic waxing tools provided for free.  Bring your skis and our experts will help you figure it all out.  See bouldernordicsport.com for details.

The next presentation will be a report from the Canmore World Cup Races by BNS owner Nathan Schultz.  We will watch some of the racing on TV and Nathan will discuss his experiences at the races working on the US Ski Team's waxing crew and coaching some of the athletes.

BNS will run two Technique Clinics Feb 5 (Skating) and Feb 12 (Classic) at the shop.  Nathan Schultz will be leading these and will be covering the fundamentals of each technique with demonstrations, drills and video to elaborate.  These will be intermediate to advanced-level, but also understandable to beginners.  Registration is $25 per clinic and space is limited.  Register on-line at bouldernordic.com or at the store.

Cold Weather Tips
Part 1: Waxing
It was 2° F with the wind howling at 30-50MPH for our Tuesday morning training group at Eldora this week, reminding us that winter has not yet departed. We have seen a lot of people in the shop frustrated by slow snow and cold extremities.  We just posted part one (waxing) of an article Nathan wrote for the Master Skier about preparing for the cold.  Part two (tips to stay warm) will come next issue.

Training Tips
Keep up the strength
This is the time of year when many of us have been skiing a lot but not doing much else.  Don't forget to maintain strength if you have a short lull in your schedule.  Avoid strength work closer than 10 days before an important event, but if you have a break or can train through some events, it is important to maintain your power by doing both general and specific strength.  Keep it relatively light and focus on specific and core strength.

A few workouts we like:
  1. Specific Strength Day.  Warm up skiing normally, then do 15-45 minutes skating without poles followed by a short section with legs & arms and then do 15-45 minutes of double-pole only.
  2. Specific upper-body strength.  Do 2-7 sets of 3 exercises with arms only in the middle of a distance ski or rollerski workout.  Double-pole, single-pole and then do tricep isolations by standing up straight and only using your arms to push - no bending or compressing with the core.
  3. 8-minute abs: pick 8 core exercises and do each exercise for one minute before continuing on to the next.  Do these every day.
  4. Rollerboard, dips, pull-ups and plyometric leg jumps.
