Try applying the Platinum Rule during conversation.
"Treat others in the way they like to be treated."
What does that mean? To make adjustments for the variety of people you talk to.
Examples:
When talking to people not fluent in your language, speak more slowly and clearly, and don't use big, difficult words.
When talking to certain elders who may have a hearing loss, talk more loudly.
When talking to persons unfamiliar with your subject, explain carefully and use examples, even draw them a picture if necessary.
When you men talk to women, be willing to listen to many details.
When you women talk to men, get to the point - the gist of what you mean.
Although the ancient Golden Rule is a wonderful principle ("Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You"), it doesn't take into account the differences among certain people who may not wish to be treated in the way you prefer to be treated.
For a positive change, apply the Platinum Rule.
