Tip:   "Words Are Birds"

For conversation, having fresh, useful, or entertaining ideas to share is a very good thing.  An alarming number of people have nothing fresh or interesting to share.

Every day -- if you are alert -- such ideas come your way. You see them while driving; you hear or read them in the media; you are told such ideas by others; and good ideas arrive unexpectedly via your imagination and intuition. However, if you don't record those ideas or stop and think about them, they don't "stick."   They don't find their way into long-term memory.

"Words are birds" and, unless you capture them, they fly away. After a short time you'll forget them and can't retrieve them. You'll have fewer fresh ideas for yourself and to share with others.

What can you do about this?

You can write down or audio-record the ideas. (Even one or two key words will help you remember.)

  1. Low-tech: Use 3x5 cards. (I always carry a few in my pocket and have a pen handy.)
  2. High-tech: Use your iPhone or other electronic device to write down the idea(s).
  3. Medium tech: Use a small digital audio recorder.

Note: Do not write ideas while driving. Wait until you're parked.

That's the simple method:  First, capture the ideas. Next, reflect on the ideas. Then, when appropriate, share the ideas.
