The problem with saying "no problem" is that it deflects gratitude and it re-frames the exchange from courtesy between persons to the practical matter of handling a problem. It is not as warm as certain alternatives:
Example:
The waiter performs admirably, attending to your every need and comfort. As you hand him payment and tip, you say "You did a marvelous job serving us tonight." He says "No problem." Arrrggghhh!
Instead, he could have said "My pleasure, sir." Or simply, "You're welcome."
Example:
A neighbor helps by caring for your child during an emergency. You say, "I really appreciate you looking after little Joey when we had to go to the hospital." She says "No problem." Arrrggghhh!
She could have said "I was glad to help." Or simply "Thank you."
If you eliminate "No problem" from your response repertoire and use a warmer phrase instead,
you'll achieve a less breezy and friendlier moment.
