Tip:  Offer a Conversation Prize

When you talk to people you know, can they expect something surprising and interesting?

Will there be a prize for them inside what you say? Maybe an uplifting story or some lighthearted humor? Can you offer a different perspective that causes others to say "Hmm, I've never looked at it that way." Or perhaps suggest a fine new book, music CD, or movie of the kind they enjoy? Can you share your experience, good or bad, of the new restaurant that opened in your neighborhood?

When I was a kid, I loved Cracker Jacks more for the prize inside the box than for the caramel corn and peanuts. So if I had a dime to buy something sweet, I often chose Cracker Jacks because I liked to be surprised with a toy, and I knew I could always find that "free prize" in the box.

Tip: When talking with friends and associates, don't serve up boring, predictable stuff. Don't repeat last week's news. Instead, think inside the box of your talk and include something they might prize.

Thank you for subscribing and reading this tip!

Until next week's tip,

Loren
