1. Nugget: Ways to Make Yourself Memorable

It's not just who you know; it's also who knows you.

That's especially true if you're an independent professional or a small business person.  Are you someone that easily comes to mind with the customers and clients you know and the prospects you meet?  Show others that you're likeable, trustworthy, and expert and they'll probably remember you.

Here are some tips to make yourself memorable.

  1. Be easy to be with: friendly, engaged, and a good listener.
  2. Be distinctive.  If possible demonstrate your uniqueness. e.g., you're the only doctor in town who makes house calls.
  3. Make yourself "sticky" with your manner and style. Maybe it's your sense of humor, or your colorful language, or your expressive manner.
  4. Give them something unusual, like a special kind of business card they'll want to keep, perhaps one with useful information on the back. ( how to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius temperatures and vice versa, or numbers to call for emergencies.)  Even for social life, having cards is good so that you don't have to write your contact information on a napkin or scrap of paper.
  5. If you want a person to know you better, follow up by sending a special report that shows your expertise. (Don't send them a sales brochure.)  Or mail them a magazine clipping of interest with a personal note. You could also follow up with a friendly phone call within a few days.

Do even one or two of the above and you'll stand out from the standard and usual.

 Until next week,

 Loren
