SERC SITES - Shavuot Resources
                                                       May 2010 ~  Iyar - Sivan 5770

Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai. It begins on the evening of
May 18 ~ 5 Sivan. The first and second day (when celebrated) are on May 19 and 20.

Among the many unique customs of Shavuot are staying awake all night on the first night
to study (Tikkun leyl Shavuot); eating dairy foods; and decorating homes and synagogues
with flowers.

The counting of the omer is completed. The Ten Commandments and the Book of Ruth
are read. Confirmation ceremonies honor students who continued their Jewish learning
beyond Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Shavuot is a wonderful, joyous holiday - we encourage you to contact a synagogue in
your area and join in the celebration!  If you need any assistance, please feel free to be in touch.

May is also Jewish American Heritage Month - learn more here and spread the word!

Pedagogic Pearls

"If you truly wish your children to study Torah, study it yourself in their presence. They will follow your example. Otherwise, they will not themselves study Torah but will simply instruct their children to do so." (Rabbi Menahem Mendel of Kotzk).

When you don't know an answer in class, use it as a teachable moment: Tell your students, "I don't know.
Let's learn together and find out." This exemplifies one of the lessons of Hil
hot Talmud Torah: "Every Jew is obligated to learn Torah."
