8 Resources for Hanukkah

1.  Hanukkah Symbols Puzzle  - a cooperative learning activity for primary grades

2.  A Special Hanukkah - a guide for celebrating the holiday with children who have special needs

3. Morim.org's site contains articles and programs about Hanukkah.

4.  The Lookstein Center's Hanukkah resources include lesson plans, Powerpoints and articles for all ages.

5.  Check out Youtube for Hanukkah: a highlight for young children is "A Sesame Street Hanukkah." There's a "Chanukah's Da Bomb" rap for middle schoolers, a fun Hanukkah "Flash Mob," and the classic Adam Sandler Hanukkah song.

6.  A simple retelling of the Hanukkah story, followed by some across-the-curriculum activities from Education World.

7.  "Chanukah on the Net" provides a welcome to the holiday, with background info, transliterated blessings, videos for each night and a demonstration of how to light the Hanukkah candles!

8. Beautiful Hanukkah posters are available from the JECC Teacher Center.  And, until Hanukkah, they have a special offer - make any purchase and get a FREE 11 x 17 Hanukkah poster with your order.

Pedagogic Pearls

Think about what rest and reflection means to a child - a chance to stop and think, a time to wait, an opportunity to play without being rushed.  As we ask questions of our children, let's be sure that we give them the time they need to answer and not contribute to the pressure to accommodate a schedule.

Technology Tips

ACAJE/JOP now has its calendar online! Your school or synagogue can also use Google calendars to enable staff members to easily share their calendar information - both internally and publicly.  Here is a short how-to video.

Video & Book of the Month

There No Such Thing as a Chanukah Bush, Sandy Goldstein   V-746
This is an excellent trigger film, based on the book of the same name, that tells the story of a Jewish girl who wants to participate in Christmas celebrations. Her parents gently remind her of the beauty of her Jewish heritage, while allowing her to experience other religion's traditions as well. COLOR; 20 MINUTES; AGE: 6-13. A teacher's guide is available.

The Christmas Menorahs : How a Town Fought Hate    by Janice Cohn
Based on real events that happened in Billings in 1993, the author's  powerful narrative tells how two children, two families, and a community resolve to stand together against bigotry and acts of hatred.
