WTCA opening of "Reduced"
VSA arts of Florida (VSAFL) and the West Tampa
Center for the Arts held the Opening Reception for the
exhibition entitled "REDUCED" on Friday, December
14th from 6:00 - 10:00pm. VSA's Open Door Gallery,
located on the second floor of the Center, featured the
pen & ink works of VSAFL Artist Registry member
Robert Malcom, who was one of the over 400
attendees at the event. Despite the rainy weather,
Robert seemed pleased with the number of people
who walked through the gallery admiring his work.
Another VSAFL Artist Registry member, Lora Duguay,
served as hostess for the entire event, greeting
guests as they entered the building. Lora says of her
experience at the event, "Having the opportunity to be a
part of the West Tampa Center for the Arts is a
fascinating experience for me as an artist with a
disability. The diversity of the artists in the building, as
well as the opportunities this partnership will provide,
will allow the artists at VSA to network with the general
arts community and grow as artists."
This was the second of four exhibitions that VSA will
hold as part of its partnership with the West Tampa
Center for the Arts. Artist workshops at WTCA will
begin in late January.

| Residency Program at Carnival Center in Miami |
| |
350 students, grades K-12, who participated in 20
VSA arts of Florida artist residency programs across
Miami-Dade County, celebrated their
accomplishments on December 10 and 11, 2007, at
the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts. The
students, whose residency programs were in music,
drama, movement, and visual arts, also had an
opportunity to exhibit their visual artworks in the lobby
of the Center during the culminating performances.
These exciting performances were the result of the
second year of a unique collaboration between VSA
arts of Florida, the Carnival Center for the Performing
Arts and the Miami-Dade County Public School
System, Division of Special Education to provide a
strong artist residency program to students with
disabilities in inclusive environments.
One teacher of senior high school students that have
profound mental and physical disabilities who
participated in the program, sums up many of the
feelings from the performances with this quote from
her letter of appreciation, "The entire experience, from
start to finish, brought wonderful looks of sheer
happiness to my students' faces. They
UNDERSTOOD! They finally had THEIR chance to
shine! It was a beautiful day that will be remembered
for a long time!"
