VSA Young Soloist Award Program
VSA arts of Florida was pleased to present the 1st
annual Young Soloist Awards at the Tampa Bay
Performing Arts Center on October 20, 2007. This
event featured five very talented young musicians
with disabilities selected from a statewide call, as well
as our 2007 Exemplary Participant Recognition Award
winners. Performances by Mezzo-soprano Laurie
Rubin, a prior International Young Soloist Award
winner, and the Tampa Bay Children's Chorus added
to this very inspiring program. The top two Young
Soloist state finalists, Ashley Townsend and Brianna
Duensing, both from Volusia County, received a
$1000 savings bond and will represent the state of
Florida at the International Young Soloist competition
this spring at the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The remaining
three finalists, Lauren Burke, from Kissimmee, Dallas
Remonda, from Cape Coral, and Jessica Tomlinson,
from St. Petersburg, received $500 savings bonds.
The 5th annual Exemplary Participant Award winners
are Vivienne Crews, from Miami, in the category of a
student with a disability that has shown exemplary
work in art or music, and Omar Alvarado, from
Okeechobee, in the category of a student with a
disability that has shown dramatic personal growth or
leadership through his participation in art activities.
The runners-up included: Lindsay Krajewski of
Bradenton, and Victoria Gonzalez, of Kissimmee.
The VSA arts of Florida Young Soloist Awards event
was a showcase of best practices in cultural access.
In addition to the use of assistive technology, all
printed material as well as the program was in braille
and large print formats.
