Winners of Florida Monthly Magazine and Florida Pride

Florida Pride

Florida PRIDE! is an arts program in partnership with Arts for A Complete Educiation (ACE) and VSA arts of Florida in which a call for art is sent seeking art work from students in grades k-12 for the holiday cards of First Lady Columba Bush and Lt. Governor Toni Jennings. Art work from students with disabilities are used for the card of the Lt. Governor. For 2006, the theme was “The Art of Family” in which students were invited to use art to express their ideas about family. This year, for the first time, the Lt. Governor selected two pieces of art work for her holiday card. Congratulations to Elijah from Merritt Island and Michael from Fort Piece. From a submission of 112 entries, twenty-two of the pieces submitted for the Lt. Governor have been selected to go on exhibition at the VSAFL Open Door Gallery. The exhibition runs through April 15th. end

  • Art on the Move artwork

“Art on the Move” is a traveling art exhibit accessible to individuals of all abilities. The exhibit features 20 selected works of art created by children with disabilities in the Miami-Dade County Public School system. Four of the works have also been recreated as 3-dimensional tactile versions to be touched. This exhibition is one of the first in Florida to be visually described using cell phone technology. Visual description is an assistive technology that brings pictures to life through words. To preview visual description dial 703-637-6780. The call is free from any cell phone. “Art on the Move” is the result of a collaboration between VSA arts of Florida and the Mailman Center for Child Development at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The exhibition will tour 7 sites in Miami-Dade county during 2007 and throughout Florida in 2008. For a list of exhibition sites go to www.vsafl.org.

  • Artist Residency in movement

The artist in residence program is a comprehensive 8- 10 week arts experience led by a teaching artist trained to work with individuals with disabilities and working in collaboration with a classroom teacher. An elementary teacher in an inclusive classroom in Tampa had a movement artist in residence work with her students. The teacher commented that a visually impaired student with limited movement participated in the residency and as a result the student “moved more in the short class session than in the last ten years!”
