Spring Session Benefit Concert Series

6/15 to 6/17/12

Greetings!

One of the most important aspects of Plugged In is the emphasis placed on showing students how they can use music to better the world. Plugged In does this by supporting our students to throw a benefit concert at the end of each session to benefit a charity or organization that is making great positive change in the world.  The students choose which charity Plugged In will support at our Community Engage evening.  At Community engage students present charities and causes that are important to them. Students explain how they learned about the charities, what needs are met by the organizations and why they feel it is important to support the organizations. By the end of the evening after much discussion and voting the students determine the recipient charitable organization for the concert.

This session the students have chosen to support some very important research focused on helping individuals dealing with brain tumors.  This research is being done at Mass General Hospital by two amazing doctors, Dr. Gerstner and Dr. Curry.  They are researching the use of advanced imaging to assess tumor response to vaccine therapy.  The goal of this research is to optimize MRI techniques to accurately predict tumor prognosis, response to treatment and mechanisms of tumor resistance.

So get ready to support incredibly important research and for a fantastic concert series this June 15, 16 & 17!

We've got pictures!  If you missed Community Engage or just want to see how much fun we had check out these photos from the event!

 The Jimmy Fund

The Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a place where children and their families find hope.  For people in New England and around the globe, the Jimmy Fund Clinic is one of the world's premier centers for pediatric cancer research and treatment. Starting in the 1940s, when Institute founder Sidney Farber, M.D. used drug therapy to achieve the first-ever remissions of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Dana-Farber researchers have made strides against virtually every type of cancer that strikes children.

Bikes Not Bombs

Bikes Not Bombs uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change! They reclaim thousands of bicycles each year.  Bikes Not Bombs creates local and global programs that provide skill development, jobs, and sustainable transportation as well as programs that mobilize youth and adults to be leaders in community transformation.

Genuine Voices

The mission of Genuine Voices is to teach music, musical composition, and computer-based music "sequencing" to youth in juvenile detention centers and other educational and institutional settings across the United States and Worldwide.  By fostering these youth's musical abilities and skills Genuine Voices assist them in their ability to make positive life decisions.

Ronnie James Dio Stand Up & Shout Cancer Fund
The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund is dedicated to support research and education that furthers early detection, prevention and treatment of prostate, colon and stomach cancers. Their philosophy stems from the notion that "Knowledge Equals Power."  Early detection allows people to effectively plan strategies to deal with the disease early on and affords a better chance to overcome the cancer.

Love Music, Hate Racism

Music is a living testimony to the fact that cultures can and do mix. It unites us and gives us strength, and offers a vibrant celebration of our multicultural and multiracial society. Racism seeks only to divide and weaken us. Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) was set up in 2002 in response to the rising levels of racism.  LMHR uses the energy of the music scene to celebrate diversity and involve people in anti-racist and anti-fascist activity.

Run For Congo Women (through Women for Women)
Women for Women International supports women in war and post-war regions-like our sisters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo- with financial assistance, job skills training, rights awareness education, trauma counseling, and small business assistance so they can rebuild their lives.

Bullies Out

BulliesOut aims to initiate and support efforts to create a safe and healthy learning community which recognizes, respects and celebrates diversity. A key theme is creating an environment that improves the social, emotional and academic wellbeing across settings where children and young people, parents and professionals alike feel confident in dealing with bullying and have faith that appropriate action will be taken if instances are reported.

Relay For Life

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps for life!

Somaly Mam Foundation

Co-founded by sexual slavery survivor,  Somaly Mam, the Foundation works to eradicate human trafficking, liberate its victims, and empower survivors so they can create and sustain lives of dignity. The Foundation supports survivor rescue, shelter, and rehabilitation programs globally with a special focus on Southeast Asia, where the trafficking of women and girls, some as young as five, is a widespread practice. The Somaly Mam Foundation also runs awareness and advocacy campaigns in North America and around the world that shed light on the crime of human trafficking and focus on getting the public and governments involved in the fight to abolish modern day slavery.

To Write Love On Her Arms

To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.  TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.

ASPCA

Founded in 1866, the ASPCA was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. The ASPCA's mission, as stated by founder Henry Bergh, is "to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States." The ASPCA works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with shelters nationwide.

Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund

The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund serves United States military personnel wounded or injured in service to our nation, and their families.  Supporting these heroes helps repay the debt all Americans owe them for the sacrifices they have made in service to our nation.  They are, in the words of IFHF founder, the late Zachary Fisher, "our nation's greatest national resource," and they deserve all the help that our nation can provide.  The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is a leader in meeting this important national mission.

Thank you to all of the students who came to Community Engage to share their ideas and help choose a worthy charity for this sessions benefit concert!

Sincerely,
Sandra, Tom and Dan
