WE CARE (Women's Emergency Communication and Reliable Electricity)
Solar was founded by Dr. Laura Stachel, an obstetrician-gynecologist
who has studied maternal health in Nigeria, which accounts for 11% of
maternal deaths worldwide. She quickly recognized that the unreliable
electricity severely compromised the delivery of maternity care.
Proceeds from "A Night for Light" will help purchase "solar suitcases," that provide lighting and communications for delivery and operating rooms at hospitals and clinics in Nigeria, which has one of the world's highest rates of maternal mortality. Sporadic electricity impairs the functioning of maternity wards, operating rooms, and blood banks, compromising the ability of Nigerian health care workers to provide safe, appropriate and timely medical care.
Dr. Stachel created WE CARE Solar along with her husband, a solar energy educator, and colleagues at UC Berkeley. WE CARE Solar designs solar electric systems and installs them at hospitals in developing countries, providing improved lighting, mobile telecommunication devices and blood bank refrigeration.
At the "A Night for Light" concert, Dr. Stachel will share slides and stories of WE CARE Solar's work in Nigeria
