SUMMER 2007

Dear (Contact First Name),

Happy Fathers Day!

I don't know about you, but when it comes to Father's Day I am always struggling to find just the right gift for my Dad.  It was easier when I was younger - my sister and I always gave my dad the same gift - the standard work shirt with matching tie or perhaps another bottle of English Leather cologne.  Now that I am older and supposedly wiser (my Father has never worked in an office and would never wear cologne) I have found the perfect gift.

This year, my Father will receive a personalized brick purchased in his name in support of Phoenix Day's "Buy a Brick" program.  The Buy a Brick program will help Phoenix Day pave a tricycle path for the children.

This is the perfect gift for all brothers, fathers, grandfathers, uncles or any special man in your life.  Not only does it provide a great feeling of doing "something good" and offers a great way to honor your father, but you don't have to worry about  picking out just the right gift because when you a buy a brick for Phoenix Day, you are helping to support the one thing that all dads have in common - children.  Plus, it is easy, simply go to our website at www.phoenixday.org to purchase the brick on line and the children at Phoenix Day will send a heartfelt note of thanks to your father on your behalf.

I can think of no better way to celebrate the Fathers in our lives than by helping children receive the best education possible.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at wdoran@phoenixday.org. Thank you again for all of your support of Phoenix Day.  We truly appreciate it!

Sincerely,

Wimberly Doran

McDowell Mountain Music Festival
Family

On April 27 and 28, Phoenix Day was out in full force at the McDowell Mountain Music Festival.  Phoenix Day staff and volunteers manned the kids' booth where we were able to relive our childhoods by helping   the kids who attended the Festival make arts and crafts.  Among the items we made were foam sun visors, bracelets, door hangers and picture frames.  In addition, we had a face painter, a clown and a balloon magician on hand for the kids to enjoy.

We are so proud to be associated with this great event and wish to express our sincere appreciation to John Largay, Heather Rogers and the whole gang at Wespac Construction for their tremendous support of Phoenix Day.

Make A Difference Day
MAD

On Saturday, April 21 Phoenix Day experienced its very own "Day of Beauty" through Make A Difference's Serve A Thon for Schools.

Volunteers from Fennemore Craig and a handful of individuals painted our toddler wing and added a much needed splash of color to our classrooms by painting accent walls.  In addition, they freshened up the original wall color with a new coat of paint and cleaned and disinfected the classroom furniture.

Promoting Pre-Kindergartners

Pre-KLeaving pre-school to enter a more formal educational system represents a major transition for every parent and their child. The environment will be new, the challenges will be different, and new relationships will need to be formed. Phoenix Day's goal is to prepare and ensure that our Pre-Kindergartners are ready to take on this very important transition in their lives.

In the next three months Phoenix Day will be focusing on:

Ensuring the children are ready in the following areas: Academic, Social and Emotional

  • An Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) will be conducted on each child
  • A Parent/Teacher Conference will be provided prior to leaving Phoenix Day
  • Each family will be given a Kindergarten Readiness Exam to complete at home to assess if their child is ready for kindergarten or if additional assistance is needed in certain areas

We will miss our pre-kindergartners and hope they will remain in touch with us through the years.

"Muevete" (Move) Phoenix Day

Muevete PDPhoenix Day staff is on the move! Mini-grant funding from the Arizona Department of Health Services to the South Central Phoenix Health Coalition, has allowed Phoenix Day/Health Links to implement a special walking program for Phoenix Day staff.  With the donation of pedometers from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Arizona, 40 staff employees have been walking their way to health and increased daily physical activity.  At the end of the 12 week program, one of the two participating teams will win a "Day of Beauty" comprised of hair style, facial, make-up application, manicure and pedicure at the Maricopa Skill Center Beauty School.

In addition, the "Muevete" program provided a quarterly nutrition and education workshop classes for staff and families over the past year.  The purpose of this component was teaching healthy eating and developing nutrition and activity knowledge.

Early Childhood Obesity Prevention
Obesity Prevention

Phoenix Day is taking an active interest in the prevention of childhood obesity.  With Lillian Garcia, director of Health Links at the helm, Phoenix Day is at the forefront of this worthwhile cause. Funding from the Catholic HealthCare West Foundation has enabled Phoenix Day/Health Links to promote nutrition and physical activity for the children, staff and families served at Phoenix Day.  Quarterly nutrition workshops were conducted promoting healthy eating; a physical activity program was implemented into the daily curriculum for the Preschool and PreKindergarten classrooms.  The third component of the grant is being implemented in May, 2007 with the Parents Lead Active Youth (PLAY) program.  In conjunction with ASU College of Nursing, the cognitive-behavioral intervention will focus on children's behaviors, feelings and activities as they relate to a healthy lifestyle.
