Dear friends -
Have you ever thought about taking a course in Sustainable Treehouse Design and Construction? How about Rain Garden Design, or Solar Design? Parent/Child Woodworking? Let me introduce you to the Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Warren, Vermont where they offer courses for the professional design/builder and for the
do-it-yourself design/build homeowner -- all geared toward making a more sustainable world.
We are lucky to have this unique program in our own back yard of New England and my hope is that this newsletter may inspire you to take a class sometime or to perhaps think about your home with fresh eyes.
"Organic architecture seeks a superior sense of use and a finer
sense of comfort, expressed in organic simplicity." - Frank Lloyd Wright
Have a fun summer!

Yestermorrow Design/Build School
|

Yestermorrow Design/Build School is an institution very
attuned to the idea of sustainable building techniques as well as the idea of
"Design Build" -- an idea that my firm has always adhered to.
In fact, both myself and members of the team at TBA have taken courses at Yestermorrow.
Instead of attempting to paraphrase the great volume of information that is found on their website, I've done my best to include excerpts below that describe their mission and approach to educating all
members of the public about designing and building our environment. As the school
caters to both enthusiasts and professionals you should contact them if you are interested in
exploring your own passion for design, craft or want to go to a class on community building issues. Want to build solar into your own home? This is
the place. Check it out!
Yestermorrow
Design/Build School offers over 100 hands-on courses per year in design,
construction, woodworking, and architectural craft and offers a variety of courses
concentrating in sustainable design.
Now in
its 28th year, Yestermorrow is one of the only design/build schools in the
country, teaching both design and construction skills. Our 1-day to 2-week
hands-on courses are taught by top architects, builders, and
tradespeople from across the country. For people of all ages and
experience levels, from novice to professional.
Mission
Yestermorrow Design/Build School inspires people to create a
better, more sustainable world by providing hands-on education that integrates
design and craft as a creative, interactive process.
Philosophy
Yestermorrow's courses are specifically designed to demystify the designing and
building processes using hands-on, experiential learning to teach students the
art and wisdom of good design and the skill and savvy of enduring craftsmanship
as a single, integrated process.
This creative process offers students unique insight into the
oftentimes disparate worlds of the architect and the builder. Architects are
routinely trained without any building experience that might inform their
designs, and builders are trained to execute without a sense of the overarching
purpose or design.
Combining design and building offers numerous advantages and
promotes the creation of intentional and inspired buildings and communities
that enhance our world. From the professional design/builder to the
do-it-yourself design/build homeowner, every designer should know how to build
and every builder should know how to design. This philosophy sets Yestermorrow
apart from other educational institutions.
