Dear friends -

Be honest...does your home truly express who you are?

"My house is me and I am it.  My house is where I like to be and it looks like all my dreams..."  Mr. Plumbean from The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Manus Pinkwater

With the current financial market, many homeowners are deciding whether or not to sell their home or stay where they are.  Homeowners also are finding that it's cheaper to remodel what they have than to buy or build something comparable.  I frequently hear clients tell me that they want to make sure they don't do anything "out of the ordinary" to their home when discussing a renovation or,  they don't want to do anything unique that might affect a return on a resale.  I always leave those appointments wondering exactly how happy those folks really are in their home.

In this newsletter, I hope to invigorate homeowners that are looking to stay in their home and to encourage them to express themselves with a creative remodeling vision.  While, of course, TBA welcomes and works with homeowners who require a spruce-up-to-sell program for their home, we do love the opportunity to make a home one that the owners have always dreamed of.

I am a firm believer that nothing you do to your home is going to be what anyone else would do and, when undertaking a home remodeling project it should be primarily for your own enjoyment.  When a person really takes on self-expression through home remodeling, the results are always more fulfilling to the people that live there than some all-encompassing generic approach.  Expressing yourself in your home will make your heart soar -- it will improve the way your family interacts and simply put, make life better.

A friend of mine recently shared with me one of her children's favorite books, which has now become my current personal favorite.  orange splotIt is a story called "The Big Orange Splot" by Daniel Pinkwater

Mr. Plumbean lives on a 'neat street' where all the houses look the same. One day, an orange splot of paint is dropped on his roof, and instead of removing it, Plumbean begins to transform his house into a mecca of color, palm trees, and a hammock. The neighbors are aghast! As each goes to convince him to make it a neat street again, Plumbean explains, 'My house is me and I am it. My house is where I like to be and it looks like all my dreams.' The neighbors end up chatting into the night about their own interests and dreams, and subsequently create their fantasy houses, including a castle and a ship. The formerly neat, now fascinating and alive street, lives happily ever after.

I LOVE this story because it parallels my own beliefs about living and designing a home.  Part of our process at TBA involves guiding each client as they discover what will personalize their space and make it truly their own.  In this way I think of myself as Mr. Plumbean....a remodeling catalyst and coach for change and self-expression.
"Mr Plumbean" Inspired TBA Projects

Here are some projects that TBA has completed for homeowners that remind us all that sometimes breaking the mold is the best way to express our passions and aspirations.
mug island kitchen
In this Lexington kitchen, the visual center piece is a custom island with a wood and glass shelf sculpture that showcases the owners's art mug collection.  Within the more modern aesthetics of this home and kitchen, the art mugs create a stunning, colorful and fun one-of-a-kind feature.

"For years, I've dreamt of this big, open bath --- really big.  Bigger than my bedroom.  It's not for everyone.  It's unique.  That's what creating a custom home means to me."

bathroomThis quote from a Sudbury client is the perfect example of someone who completed the sentence, "This is my house because...".  The owner wanted something out of the ordinary and she had it done -- an amazing bathroom.

Then, of course, there is Thomas' own kitchen.  mod colonial kitchenThe space was designed and executed with passion and joy and is a rewarding place to entertain, create and live in.  The end product was intended to look artistic and unique (a la Mr. Plumbean) while still reflecting the patina throughout that ties the kitchen back in with the feel of the original 1760's colonial house.

If you or anyone you know can use the assistance of a "Mr. Plumbean-inspired" company to design and remodel a home that expresses the owner, please contact us.
