Girl with Magnets
Children's Museums provide a safe, challenging environment where children playfully explore and imagine while building self-esteem
and critical
thinking skills.

A children's museum in Sonoma County will be a valuable cultural resource for all families! Please consider making a gift today to help open our doors as soon as possible - any amount would be greatly appreciated.

It's easy to donate on our website.

Birthday Parties!

We are taking reservations for 2011

Museum-on-the-Go Birthday Parties which can now be hosted at our new home!

We can still bring the Museum-on-the-Go to your location for an additional fee.

SUMMER CAMPS!

thumbsup

Enroll your children in the CMOSC's first SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM at our site starting in mid June!

Kids will be immersed in a world of art and science, exploring and investigating the world around them in exciting ways.

Whether inventing kinetic contraptions, creating artistic wonders, exploring the marvels of Sonoma County's bounties or investigating the chemistry of a chocolate chip cookie, each week will be filled with exciting and unforgettable activities that will make your child's summer a fantastic one.

Look for registration details on our website and in our next newsletter this spring.

Winter Break Project
bird feeder

Set up a winter food area in your yard for birds that is relatively safe from cats, etc.

Peanut butter pinecone. Add a bit of cornmeal or oats to the peanut butter to absorb some of the oils so it does not become a problem to birds.

String popcorn and cranberries and decorate an outdoor tree with your crafts for the birds and squirrels.

Some birds are ground feeders.

Leave some pinecones out for them for them too.

Make it close to a window that you can watch discreetly from. Plan some family time to observe them. How many birds do you see? How many different kinds of birds do you see?

For field guides and information on related local happenings check out the Wild Birds Unlimited Store in Santa Rosa.

A truly wonderFULL event...

Time To Wonder Logo

We would like to thank the more than 250 guests who attended the first annual "Time to Wonder" luncheon benefiting the Children's Museum of Sonoma County on September 23rd.

Guests learned about the vision and mission of the CMOSC, made a musical instrument out of popsicle sticks and rubber bands, watched a terrific video and enjoyed a delicious lunch with friends and colleagues!

We were thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive reception for the idea of a permanent children's museum in Sonoma County--and more than $100,000 in pledges and donations was raised! Now that's truly WonderFULL!

Special thanks goes to the table hosts who made the event such a roaring success, Laura Forgue for her beautiful flower arrangements, and to the many volunteers without whom it would not have been possible!

And by popular demand, we've added a page to our website with a list of the 40 famous scientists that were used as table markers.

We are very excited to let you know that the Children's Museum of Sonoma County (CMOSC) has been busy preparing the new site at 1835 W. Steele Lane for special events, birthday parties, and summer camps in 2011!

Though the museum will not be open for business on a regular basis until late 2012, it will begin hosting events, birthday parties and programs immediately.

In fact, several exhibit design workshops have already taken place at the site over the past few months and some very creative exhibit ideas were discussed!

The most recent exhibit design workshop included children ages 4-12 divided into three groups.  Each group brainstormed in three different design areas (air/wind, water/earth, agriculture/farm). Robin Stephani, a local design professional, and Linda Herman, artist and business consultant, assisted with content, format, and group facilitation.  Amanda Kirk, a local science teacher, and Theresa Giacomino, Dir. of Programs and Education for CMOSC, also facilitated. Three talented artists, Steve Purcell, Brian Scharf and Brian Fee, sketched the ideas in real time. Tina DiCicco volunteered to videotape the day's events. The result was an imaginative, energizing, fun-filled extravaganza of creativity!

We want to thank everyone who participated in or helped organize these productive workshops. Special thanks to  Wright Contracting for underwriting the recent children's workshop, David Sword, for surveying site maintenance, Medtronic for donating staff volunteer time to clean, paint, and generally make the site more welcoming, and Friedman's Home Improvement, which donated most of the supplies.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF SONOMA COUNTY!

Site Development Update

We have been working with AXIA Architects and have recently completed the preliminary conceptual design phase for the site.  AXIA was also instrumental in helping facilitate a recent grant application with the State of California, which we hope to hear back from in the spring.

We are so pleased to be working with such a talented and competent firm and would like to acknowledge all of the hours they've put into this project so far, many of which were donated. Click here to view the site plans.

We are also halfway into exhibit design master planning with S2 Associates out of Napa.  Click here to view the style sketches and high concept drawings on our website.

Please give us feedback or comments on the website or email them to collette@cmosc.org. We want to hear what you think!
