The School Age Child
PART THREE in Developmental Perspectives of Cognition and Play
by Bernice Callahan, Board Member, Founder of California Parenting Institute, and former school teacher
Thought
processes undergo dramatic changes as the child moves from the
intuitive thinking of the preschool years to the logical operations of
the school-age years. The school age child gains new knowledge and
develops more efficient problem-solving ability and greater flexibility
of thinking. According to the theories of Piaget, the 6-year old and
7-year-old remain in the intuitive thought stage characteristic of the
older preschool child. By age 8 years, the child moves into the stage
of concrete operations, followed by the stage of formal operations at
around 12 years.

Egg In A Bottle Adult Supervision Required!Materials: Wide Mouthed Glass Bottle -clean and dry Hard Boiled Egg - peeled and a little bigger than bottle opening Matches Paper Strips - to light with matches
Experiment: The object is to get the egg into the bottle without harming it. 1. Rub some water around the mouth of the bottle. 2. ADULT: Use a match to light a strip of paper on fire and put it in the bottle. 3. Immediately cover the mouth of the bottle with the egg.
In just seconds, the fire will go out, and some invisible force will literally "push" the egg into the bottle. That's amazing!

| Letter From the President |
Greetings!
As we close out 2007, we want to celebrate that the Children's Museum of the North Bay participated in 15 events this year throughout Sonoma County, engaging over 2500 children and their caregivers. Thank you for helping make that happen!
To continue that momentum, energy, success, and impact on your community we need your help. We want to make 2008 even better and have some bold initiatives planned such as securing a permanent site. To realize this vision, we are issuing a call to action to our esteemed children's museum supporters to help us raise $750,000 by December 31, 2008.
It's simple. Here's how.
One option is to become a Founding Family today with a donation of $1,000.00. Join our growing list of donors, limited to just 100, who will have their name or the names of loved ones inscribed on a commemorative plaque in the permanent home of the Museum. It makes a wonderful Christmas gift and is completely tax deductible.
Another way to make a difference is through a recurring tax deductible donation of just $5-10/month.
Your gift will be allocated to: (1)Funding new Museum-on-the-Go Exhibits (2)Securing a permanent site for the museum (3)Launching a new Museum-on-the-Go program into the schools, which will connect children from all over Sonoma County to discovery based learning through play.
Please support us in making this goal a reality! When you make your charitable contributions this year, we hope you will include the Children's Museum of the North Bay on your list.
Thank you very much!
In gratitude,
Collette Michaud, President |
Thank You To Our Sponsors!
The Board of Directors and dedicated volunteers who made the Children's Museum of the North Bay a reality at 15 events this season thank the generous people who donated to us. You can be filled with joy when you think of 100% of your donation contributing to the learning and discovery of 2,500 children visiting our Museum on the Go programs. Thank You.
Three organizations took the leap of faith to give us donations we could use for adding needed equipment like our multimedia projector, our trailer to house and tow the MUSEUM-ON-THE-GO, and new exhibits for the museum. A very special Thank You to the Junior League of Napa Sonoma, The Petaluma Association of Realtors, and the Sunrise Rotary Club of Petaluma. Your confidence in our efforts is helping us to grow.
Our work is just beginning though towards our ultimate goal of building a permanent "green" children's museum for Sonoma County. We look forward to many more valuable partnerships with these organizations, and to the new partners who will join with us as we continue to ignite imagination and delight children of all ages.
"The Act of Giving is nearly magical. It helps the organization do its good works for many people AND it fills the donor with joy." Paraphrased from Mary Hunt

Location, location, location!
We're very excited to announce that someone has stepped forward with a generous donation of a site in Santa Rosa that meets the majority of our criteria. In order to secure the site, the donor has asked that we raise a minimum of $500,000 dollars by December 31, 2008 to show support for the concept of a children's museum in Sonoma County!
The Children's Museum of the North Bay will use these funds for the building of exhibits, operations, the Museum-on-the-Go Program, and physical site improvements. Help make the Children's Museum a reality.
You can send in your donation to PO Box 2615, Petaluma, CA 94953 or donate online here!
