ways to stay cool and beat the heat! In this issue, learn
about our upcoming events for summer and fall, try out a
science experiment, and read about our wonderful volunteer
coordinator.
The Children's Museum of the North Bay continues to grow
and expand, and that is mainly due to your support! Thank
you so much for helping make a children?s museum a reality
for Sonoma County.
Please feel free to forward this email far and wide to help
spread the word about this important community

The CMNB booth at the Santa Rosa Rose Parade and Festival
this year was packed with curious and creative children who
had a blast playing and exploring.
The ?In a Bubble? exhibit was especially popular thanks to
our wonderful volunteer, Jeff Rydman, who got a good
workout doing hundreds of squats lifting the bubble hoop up
and down almost the entire day.
At this year's first Petaluma Movies in the park on July 15th,
Theresa Giacomino,
did a science experiment using Mentos and soda that was
explosively fun to watch. And children were amazed when
they were able to blow up a balloon without using any of
their
own breath. Check out this simple and fun experiment in this
newsletter and try it at home!

| Site Update |
 |
|
We have been hard at work trying to find a permanent home
for the Children?s Museum of the North Bay. We have a few
excellent possibilities we?re considering, particularly one in
Santa Rosa and one in Petaluma. However, the hunt is
ongoing.
We are looking for at least 5000 sq ft of donated or low rent
space between Santa Rosa and Petaluma. Because we are a
nonprofit, there are possible tax breaks to the landowner. If
you know of a site or place that might be a good location for
the children?s museum, please contact Collette Michaud.

| Science Experiment - Balloon Blow Up |
 |
|
At the last Movies in the Park Event, we showed
children how to do this experiment. They absolutely loved it,
and kept coming back to do it over and over again. It's
super fun and easy for all ages to do. Give it a try at home!
Materials:
- Small plastic soda or water bottle
- 2 balloons
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Funnel
Experiment:
1. Put 1/4 cup of the vinegar in the bottle
2. Put 1 Tbsp baking soda in the balloon.
3. Put the balloon on the bottle.
4. Lift the balloon so the baking soda falls into the bottle.
5. Observe as the balloon blows up.
Results:
The air went up when the baking soda mixed with the vinegar
making the balloon blow up.

By Bernice Callahan, Vice-President of CMNB and Founder of
California Parenting Institute
As we move forward in the planning and preparation of various
exhibits and activities for the Children?s Museum we are
constantly
reviewing what we know about young children and how they
learn about their
world.
The Children?s Museum of the North Bay is geared to the
learning styles and
needs of young children from toddlerhood to school age.
That doesn?t mean that infants and older children won?t find
wonderful things to see and experience in our beautiful
environment (especially when we have our permanent
home). It does mean that exhibits and activities found in a
children?s museum must have multiple possibilities for
exploration, investigation, manipulation, and enjoyment.
The Children?s Museum of the North Bay keeps a
clear picture of how children learn at each stage of their
development, and acts as a guardian as well as a facilitator
of
childhood?s propensity for hands on learning.
We?d like to share with you, our supporters and parents of
our target population, the information we?re using to
guarantee our Museum is bringing the most beneficial
services and activities to the families of Sonoma County.
We?ll begin that process with an overview of cognitive and
sensory development of Toddlers. Look for the information
about Preschoolers, and School Age children in subsequent
issues of our newsletter.

Volunteer Spotlight |
|
|
|
Theresa Giacomino helps to coordinate our fantastic
volunteers. Without our volunteers, we just couldn?t make
this incredible dream a reality. Theresa has worked with
children for the past 20 years with preschool and school age
children. It?s her job and also her passion.
She also loves the
active outdoors and enjoys hiking, fishing, camping, and
playing sports. Her love of science, particularly creepy
crawlies, draws her to seasonal creek stomping for tadpoles
with her kids.
When she?s not at a CMNB event, she loves
spending time with her husband, Randy, and 2 kids, Sami
age 11 and Ryan age 8. She enjoys life to its fullest and
happiness is one of her highest priorities. One of her mottos
is ?the more the merrier? so you can often find her
surrounding herself with more kids than just her own.
She?s
excited about being part of the Children?s Museum of the
North Bay and she enjoys meeting and working with such
fabulous volunteers. It has definitely fit very well into her life
and she?s happy to say it is one of her new passions in life.
She looks forward to working with you, getting to know you
and having some fun.
