Principal's Update |
Hello, Murch Community!
Can elementary school students make a significant difference in the lives of others? Can they make a positive impact on less fortunate children who are facing unimaginable hardships? If the students are Murch Mustangs, the answer is an unqualified "yes!"
Under the leadership of the Student Council, Peer Mediators, and staff sponsors Vicki Otten, Sabrina Finberg, and Lauren Miller, Murch students launched the "Help Murch Help Haiti" campaign this week. Our students are collecting donations to send to Save the Children's Earthquake Children in Emergency Fund. As of Thursday evening - in just four days-- our Mustangs had already raised $1,600. (For more details, see "Murch Raises Money for Haiti Earthquake Victims" in today's newsletter.)
Collectively, the students are seizing the opportunity to reach out to those in crisis by bringing in coins and bills. Individually, students are rising to the occasion in myriad ways. For example, third-grader Ha Dang and her mother made cookies last weekend to sell in their apartment building's lobby, raising $105 for Help Murch Help Haiti. A lot of coins are plinking into the collection bottles, hinting at piggy banks emptied and hard-earned savings turned over to children who are in real need. Seeing the coins and the worn dollar bills coming in this week leaves the adults here in awe of our concerned and compassionate Murch children.
The Partnership for 21st Century Skills identifies "social responsibility" as one of the essential life skills that our children need to succeed as citizens and workers in the 21st century. Mastering the core academic areas is necessary for every student, but it takes much more for children to grow into successful teenagers and adults. I am grateful for the support our teachers, staff, and parents are providing to our children as they develop into global citizens. And I am extremely proud of the Murch students for demonstrating leadership and personal responsibility in this time of crisis. When I look into the faces of our children and see and hear how much they care about others, I feel very, very hopeful about our future.
Parents, if you would like to write a check to the Help Murch Help Haiti fundraising effort, please make checks payable to "Murch Elementary School." Your donation will be acknowledged with a letter of thanks for tax purposes.
On a less inspiring but still essential note, PLEASE return your letter of intent for next school year back to your child's teacher or the main office as soon as possible. If you need another copy, just give us a call and we will send one right out to you. --Dawn Ellis, principal |
HSA Update |

Hello Murch!
Several people working hard behind the scenes deserve a big thank you, starting with the HSA treasury team -- Suzanne Mackay, Molly Skelly, and Julian Berengaut -- for diligently completing our tax audit. Hats off also to HSA communications chair, Robin Schepper, who has been working with Laura Kaiser to redesign the Murch Web site. We look forward to seeing the new interface and updated content in mid February.
It's not too early to book a sitter so you can attend the Murch auction the night of March 6. Auction chair Karissa Kovner and her committee are compiling this year's fabulous donations into the catalog, preparing for the debut of a first-ever, early-bird online auction of select items in late February, and going full steam on preparations for a fabulous evening. Let's all do our part to make this multi-faceted fundraiser a success by reserving tickets by Feb. 15, helping your children finish their class project, and signing up to be a sponsor.
Finally, we look forward to seeing you all at the Murch Talent Show next Friday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

Time to RSVP for March 6
It was great to see so many new faces at the Build-A-Wine-Cellar party last Saturday. A big thank you to Martha and Damian Saccocio for hosting this terrific soiree. Guests donated some amazing bottles for the "Murch Wine Cellar." This stellar collection of wine is always one of the most popular items in the Murch auction.
To make sure you have a chance to bid on this package - and hundreds of other amazing items - please r.s.v.p. for the March 6th auction by February 15. Tickets are $40; at the door, $45. Just detach the reply card from the invitation you received in the mail, and mail it back with a check in the envelope provided, or drop it in Karissa Kovner's folder on the HSA table. You can also make your reservation online, which automatically registers you for Quick Check so you can move more quickly through check-out on auction night.
There's still time to become a sponsor whether you attend the auction or not, so please consider making an additional contribution. And be sure to check out the new online auction, which will run Feb. 19-28. Details coming soon.

Champs in Training
The Murch Mustangs boys' basketball team will play two games at the U. S. National Junior Championships on Saturday, Jan. 30. According to Coach Berger, playing against teams outside their league is a great opportunity for the players to hone their skills. The games will take place 10:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. at the Capital Sports Complex in District Heights, MD. So far this season, the Mustangs are 5 and 1. We wish the team good luck on Saturday!

Murch Raises Money for
Haiti Earthquake Victims
The Student Council and Peer Mediators kicked off a fundraising campaign this week for Haiti's earthquake victims. All monies raised will benefit the nonprofit organization Save the Children, which has a proven track record in the Caribbean country and currently has about 250 staff on the ground.
For almost 100 years, Save the Children has worked in 50 countries, and since 1978 has been providing health care, education, and food to Haitian children in need. Since the earthquake on Jan. 12, Save the Children has set up a temporary camp to provide shelter to hundreds of families left without a home in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince, expanded the number of people seen at their mobile health clinics in two areas hard hit by the earthquake, identified 5,000 families to receive shelter and non-food aid in one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake, and distributed more than 16.5 tons of medical supplies to children and families in need.
Peer Mediators visited classrooms on Monday to ask students to bring in pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars, and checks to "Help Murch Help Haiti." After school, Student Council members made posters to raise awareness of the drive. By Thursday, the school had raised more than $1,600.
But this is just a start.
Looking beyond the immediate crisis, the students would like to see this as a long-term effort. "They have discussed the possibility of eventually finding a school or a children's organization that would give the Murch community the opportunity to establish a more long-term relationship," says Student Council sponsor Sabrina Finberg. "They have great ideas for some fundraisers beyond collecting money."
Each classroom has a container for collecting money. Please bring in change, bills, and checks. Make out checks to "Murch Elementary School." Members of the Student Council and Peer Mediators will come by each morning to collect the money your class has donated.

Facts About Haiti
On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti. Haiti is the western part of Hispaniola, a large island named by Christopher Columbus -- the first European to discover it -- in 1492. Haiti is the third largest country in the Caribbean and the third poorest country in the world. Most Haitians live on less than $2 a day.
The Jan. 12 earthquake was the worst to hit Haiti in over 200 years. The earthquake destroyed thousands of homes, schools, and hospitals as it leveled most of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
An estimated 150,000 people died. In the capital, more than 400,000 families have been left without a place to live. More than three million people in Haiti cannot get food, water, or medicine on their own.
Countries, organizations, and individuals like us around the world have pledged $2 billion in aid. The United States government has pledged $100 million in aid with more to come. |

Friedman's Class Chases Vermeer
at National Gallery
Ms. Friedman's third-grade class went to the National Gallery of Art on Jan. 20. We saw four paintings by 17th-century Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer: "A Lady Writing"; "Girl With A Red Hat"; "Woman Holding A Balance"; and "Girl With A Flute."
We split up into two groups, each with a curator. A curator is someone who guides you through the museum. The curators talked about how Vermeer painted scenes from everyday life.
We got the idea to go to the museum after we read a mystery by Blue Balliett called "Chasing Vermeer." It's about a girl named Petra, a boy named Calder, and a Vermeer painting - "A Lady Writing" - that gets stolen. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens! It's very exciting. Whenever our teacher said it was time to stop reading, the whole class would moan, "Nooo!"
We also looked at a painting by another Dutch master, Jan Steen, called "The Dancing Couple." Guess what - the artist painted himself in the scene, tickling the chin of a lady in an elegant gown!

Project GROW |
Equinox Cooking Demo in Gym Sunday
The Murch gym will be packed from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, for Project GROW's kick-off event: a cooking demonstration by Chef Todd and Ellen Kassoff Gray of the Equinox Restaurant. There are still a few spaces left. If you are interested please r.s.v.p. to Evite.
The balmy weather last week reminded the GROW committee of all that still needs to be done for our Murch vegetable garden. At our meeting on Jan. 25 we discussed how to get teachers and students involved in the growing and planting, remarking the garden plots, and dates in February to set the plots.
A point of clarification from the previous newsletter: While we have received a Disney matching grant for tools and gloves, the project is not yet fully funded so we are still seeking contributions. If you are interested in assisting with any of our efforts and joining the committee, please contact Jacques Kapuscinski.

Students Make Cards for Haiti Relief
In the next few weeks in the art room, each child will create greeting cards that will be sold to raise funds for for Haiti relief. Proceeds will benefit Save the Children, along with money raised by the Student Council. Please check the Murch art blog for more information on this school-wide initiative. Cards will be sold for $4 each at specified times. I need volunteers to help in the classroom on card-making days and to help sell the cards. The dates for both activities will be listed on my blog. You do not need to sign up for these volunteer opportunities; just show up. You can help label cards, fold and cut out cards, or help the children bring their cards to completion.
