Happy New Year!

As we enter the new year and the new decade, I'd like to highlight some of our plans to drive student achievement and better prepare them for the next level of education.

I am already working with the staff and the LSRT to develop Murch's budget for next school year, which we submit to DCPS in February. We have received our enrollment projection for next year and, based on that figure, the financial allocations from DCPS to fund personnel and non-personnel purchases. Schools in DCPS are responsible for developing budgets that provide our students with a variety of instructional resources including all staff positions, classroom supplies, computers and other kinds of technology, furniture, custodial supplies, library books, and other materials.

Given the importance of using resources wisely, we have begun strategic planning to identify instructional priorities for the next several years. We will seek input from staff and parents throughout this process, which consists of three phases: 1) Defining where we are as a school community by analyzing data about the school and student performance; 2) agreeing where we want to go -- that is, the most important goals to strive for as a school; and 3) developing a plan for getting from where we are to where we want to be. The Murch LSRT and the HSA are providing direction, support, and funds, and we will be asking you, as Murch parents, to provide input and feedback throughout the planning process. Stay tuned for information about upcoming meetings in the next couple of months.

Part of the data we look at in the planning process is the survey information from parents. The District surveyed Murch and other DCPS parents last spring, and those results were just released. If you would like to see how parents viewed the school last year, you can read the survey results here

Attention Murch Parents:

Please Join Us for the 4th Annual
Murch Build-a-Wine-Cellar Party
Saturday, January 23, 7:30 - 10:30 pm
@ the home of Damian & Martha Saccocio
3723 Brandywine Street NW

Here's your chance to help Murch, contribute to the auction, AND have a fun night out. Just bring one or two bottles of really great wine to the party. That's it! The auction committee will catalog and organize the bottles to be sold as a single collection at the March 6th auction.

To make it easier for everyone, Wine Wish Lists are available at Paul's Liquors and Calvert-Woodley on Connecticut Avenue. Both shops offer a 20% discount to Murch patrons on white-tag, non-sale 750ml bottles. If you can't make it to the party, you can still drop off a bottle on Damian and Martha's front porch. All donations are tax-deductible -- and appreciated.

Please rsvp online using Evite. If you haven't received an email via Evite, please contact Martha

Remember this is a party for grown-ups only, so leave the kids at home with a babysitter!

Q & A

ms stewartGetting to Know Ms. Stewart

Pre-K teacher Jeanice B. Stewart has some outstanding qualifications for handling a roomful of kids. Besides being a former ballet dancer and majorette, she plays the sax, plans weddings, and used to operate a roller coaster ("The Hurler") at an amusement park. Here she explains her winning ways and the many facets of her very full life.

Where are you from and where did you go to school?

I was born in Richmond, Virginia, where I lived until moving to Maryland in 2005. I am the oldest of four children. My sister is also a teacher, of high-school French.  I graduated from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, with a B.A. in early childhood psychology. I started graduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond following graduation. After accepting a job with DCPS in July of 2005, I transferred to Trinity University here in DC and earned a master of arts in teaching in elementary education.

When did you come to Murch and in what capacity?

I interviewed at Murch in June of 2008 and, before I even reached home, I was offered the position as a sixth-grade earth science teacher. As sixth grade moved to the middle school setting, I chose to take my current pre-kindergarten position at Murch.

Did you always want to be a teacher?

I have always had very interesting jobs: X-Ray technician and orthodontic assistant, lifeguard, sports coordinator for summer programs at the YMCA in Richmond, roller coaster operator for the Hurler at King's Dominion, and tutor.....just to name a few.  I have never had another "career"; those jobs all lead to my profession in education. I always wanted a profession where I was able to help and teach. I vacillated between being a nurse, lawyer, or teacher. It was a hard decision, but my passion for teaching outweighed everything. I love the innocence of children, and I love seeing their face light up when a new concept is grasped. Teaching is a gift that I am blessed to have.

What has been your greatest challenge as a teacher?

Undoubtedly, teaching sixth grade. It was difficult for me to adjust to a classroom management style that was conducive to that of the middle school-aged child. It was also challenging to create lessons that were new, innovative, and fun because the kids had seen and heard everything before. After researching, reading, and consulting other colleagues, I made it through without a scratch and lived to tell the tale! The year made me a stronger teacher.

What would you say is your most memorable classroom moment?

I also previously taught fourth grade. At that time, I had two students who did not know how to read. They could barely make the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. After working with them intensively for about two months, one student was able to read a short Basal Reader story to me without my help. That will stick with me for a lifetime.

What is your secret weapon in the classroom?

I have a puppet in my classroom, Ms. Blue. She can get the students to do anything! The students love to have her read stories, give directions, or join them in a game or in completing a puzzle. This puppet has helped me relate to the students on a different level and also serves as a behavior management tool. I decided to have the puppet become part of the classroom after attending a workshop. I will have Ms. Blue as a part of my class from now on.

Anything else?

I am somewhat of a comedian. During family gatherings, I am the life of the party. My friends look forward to my giving them comic relief at any function. I have an enthusiasm about life that is contagious. I used to be a ballet dancer from the age of 4 until I left for college. I am a great swimmer and was a lifeguard in high school. I am a neat freak. Mrs. Coleman gets frustrated with my cleaning and straightening up throughout the school day. I have been told that my leadership ability is fantastic, especially under pressure. I have been a musician since the age of 9. In elementary and middle school, I played alto saxophone in the concert band. In high school, I was section leader of alto saxes in the marching and concert bands. I also play flute, clarinet, xylophone, wind chimes, and timpani. I was also a majorette and cheerleader in high school.

Wow. So how do you choose what to do in your free time?

A childhood friend and I are taking a stab at event planning.  She is a freelance writer for the Richmond Times Dispatch with an event planning column, "Taya's Take," where I serve as her editor for columns before she turns them in for publication. We are trying to juggle the heavy load of event planning along with our current careers. Our first wedding is coming up in April. I am very excited!  Then, I have so many hobbies that include knitting (I learned how to knit in Murch's knitting club by Ms. George), cross-stitching, reading (I am dying to have an Amazon Kindle), swimming, visiting museums, and SHOPPING --I love shoes and handbags!  When not at Murch, I spend a lot of time with my family. They still live in Richmond and we usually meet in Fredericksburg to eat, bowl, shop, or catch a good movie. I also enjoy spending quality time with my Shih Tzu, Brandy. She is the best ever. We enjoy long walks in the park, visiting doggie parks, and belly rubs.

What enhancements/curriculum would you like to see at Murch?

I would like to see a more concrete curriculum for Pre-Kindergarten. I would also like to see Murch crank it up a notch with technology!

Finally, how would you finish this sentence: "If I weren't a teacher, I'd be a...."

...child psychologist.

The Student Council invites all Pre-K through fifth-grade students to become a part of our second annual Lip Sync Show on March 11 and 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. No singing talent required! This is a fun activity open to all students.

Tryouts will be February 18 and 19, starting at 3:30 in the gym. A dress rehearsal will be held on March 2 and 4 at 3:30 p.m. Groups need to attend only one tryout, but must be present for BOTH rehearsals. Detailed information, rules, and permission forms will be available on the Murch site.

Garden

staking plotsProject Grow Plots Next Steps

Project Grow is growing! Thanks to the work of committee member Jeff Travers, Disney's Planet Challenge chose our project for a matching grant funded through Donorschoose.org, and we are now fully funded.

In December we held two meetings, one with the HSA to introduce the project to the Murch community and the other to coordinate the spring planting with students and teachers. Then a hardy group of volunteers staked out the garden plots on a blustery day over winter break. The plots are located in a long strip along the Reno Road fence on the hill. Some but not all of the stakes survived the January snow!

On January 9, several committee members met with Jim Crawford of New Morning Farm who offered great advice from his years of experience in organic farming. Next on the agenda: readying the plots in February for mid-March planting.

Despite the unfortunate fire at Equinox Restaurant

in December, Chef Todd Gray and Ellen Kassoff Gray remain wonderfully committed to our project. So, mark your calendars for Sunday, January 31, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the gym for the Chef Todd Cook Off! We hear soup is on the menu...

Classroom Dispatch

gecko with ms BoganYikes, a Giant Gecko!

Emma's father Jeff Travers popped into Ms. Bogan's pre-K classroom on Monday and said, "Hey, a friend of mine is here and he wants to say hello. Mind if I bring him in?" Just then, a giant gecko walked into the room! Really giant - 6 feet tall! Everyone sat there with their jaws agape. Could this be a long-lost relative of our classroom pet, Jake the leopard gecko?

gecko with kidsHe was actually the GEICO gecko that you might know from television commercials. We couldn't believe he was here in real life. We took Jake out to meet the GEICO gecko. Jake is yellow and lavender with black pattern markings; the GEICO gecko is mostly green with white and orange markings. We learned that there are several hundred species of geckos but leopard ones like Jake are one of only a few that have eyelids. Yet, like most other geckos, he can also clean and moisten his eyes with his tongue. Interestingly, the GEICO gecko didn't have eyelids and his tongue could not reach his eyes! He didn't say much either, so we didn't get to hear his cute accent. But he did bring some yummy cupcakes with gecko-green frosting. gecko realAnd Jake must have been very thrilled because he molted the next day.
