Principal's Update

The first marking period is over, and report cards are headed home on Friday, Nov. 13. The report cards in DCPS can be a bit confusing to interpret, so here are a few tips on deciphering the numbers and letters used to denote your child's progress.

Numerical symbols: DCPS uses numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) to provide parents with information on where their child is overall in relation to grade level standards in that subject area. These numbers identify the student's demonstrated proficiency of the subject area curriculum that was taught during the marking period.

*    "4" means that the student has mastered to an excellent standard the curriculum content that was taught. The student demonstrated on assessments that their understanding and proficiency on what was taught was at an advanced level.

*    "3" means that the student has mastered to a proficient standard the curriculum content that was taught. The student can demonstrate understanding and proficiency on what was taught is at grade level for that grade. A "3" score reflects work that is consistently good and seldom falls below the expectations for on-level work.

*
"2" means that the student has not yet completely mastered the curriculum content that was taught, but is approaching proficiency. The student can sometimes, but not consistently, demonstrate understanding and proficiency on what was taught. A "2" score reflects work that is usually acceptable.

*    "1" means that the student has not yet mastered the
curriculum content that was taught and does not demonstrate proficiency. The student does not usually demonstrate understanding and proficiency on what was taught.  A "1" score reflects learning that is not at grade level.

Alphabetic symbols: The second set of symbols (S, D, B, N) requires each teacher to identify the curriculum standards that were taught and where the student is in mastering each standard.  There are two possible situations with each standard: The standard has been introduced this marking period or in a past marking period; or it has not been introduced.

N:  If the standard has not been taught to that student, the grade assigned is an N.

S, D, B:
These grades show growth along a learning continuum. Occasionally, a student will master the learning standards as soon as each standard is taught. Most will take longer to get that learning secure in their heads.

*    S (SECURE): The student demonstrates a secure command of the skills taught. That is, the student consistently shows understanding of concepts, can apply skills, and meets expectations for demonstrating mastery.

*    D (DEVELOPING): The student is developing understanding of concepts and is often able to apply skills, but assessments do not yet identify the student as having demonstrated mastery.

*    B (BEGINNING): The student is just beginning to understand the concepts and skills taught. It is perfectly normal and expected for a student to get a "B" if the teacher just introduced a new concept or is working on a learning standard that is very challenging.

The first parent conference day is Dec. 7 from noon to 7 p.m. Teachers will soon be making appointments for that day. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to ask your child's teacher, the school counselor, assistant principal Norah Rabiah, or me if you need any help understanding the reporting system in DCPS or what the grading symbols mean.

Art Show

Deadline Extended for Art Entries

Art teacher Miriam Cutelis is "getting jazzed" about all the wonderful creations she's received for the art show, which will be Dec. 4. However, she's heard from a number of people who need a few more days to get their submission together, so she has extended the deadline to Nov. 20.

She reminds everyone of the submission guidelines:
*  Students from any grade may submit one or two   pieces of artwork to be shown.
*  Students must have done the work themselves in the past six months without the help of an adult.
*  All two-dimensional art must be matted (glued) on a piece of black construction paper, which you can get from Ms. Cutelis in the second-floor Art Studio.
*  Three-dimensional pieces must be submitted in a box, such as a shoe box.
*  Please turn in your artwork either before school (8:45-9 a.m.) or after (3:15-3:30 p.m.), but not while classes are in session.
*  Be sure to include a registration form. This is a slip to be attached to the lower right hand corner of the artwork indicating the artist's name, the name of the piece, materials used, and teacher's name. If you need a form, check with your teacher or on the HSA table.

Opening night will take place at 6:30 p.m., Dec. 4 in the gym. Parents who would like to help with the evening's logistics, provide refreshments, or play background music should contact Ms. Cutelis.

Murch Classifieds

In response to the many requests for a way to post classified ads for the Murch community, the HSA has created a new online site. By joining the HSA Classifieds Yahoo! Group, you can see and post what is happening in the community -- garage sales, freebies, volunteer opportunities in the city, community events, nanny shares, etc. Please note, this is a separate endeavor from the Murch Forum and Mustang Express; you need to sign up separately to access the classifieds. This is a work in progress and we welcome your suggestions.

Murch Student Wins Politics and Prose
Bookmark Contest

Sophia Diggs-Galligan, Murch fourth grader, loves to read, so it is no surprise that she entered the Politics and Prose bookmark contest to celebrate the store's 25th anniversary. As Diggs-Galligan told the Murch Mustang Express, "I am crazy about books!"ice cream sarah closser

The judges at Politics and Prose were apparently crazy about her bookmark design. Diggs-Galligan was one of three winners selected out of 50 local students, ages 5 to 17, who entered the contest. Her prize was a $25 gift card to the independent bookstore.

Diggs-Galligan's bookmark design is titled "Growing Up With Books At Politics and Prose." It shows three stages of life: a baby looking at a picture book; an adult reading to a 4-year-old girl (the same age as Sophia's younger sister); and a 9-year-old girl reading The B.F.G. by Roald Dahl, looking like she's really buried in the book. Diggs-Galligan says she selected those three things "because they were the most familiar" to her.

Diggs-Galligan said she was surprised and proud that she won. The Murch community is very proud of her, too!
