Rep. Jim Oberstar Coming to Murch
In honor of Murch's receiving the National Oberstar Safe Routes to School Award, U.S. Representative Jim Oberstar will present Principal Ellis with a trophy on Monday, October 26. Fifth-grader Anna Joos will speak on behalf of the Murch Safety Patrol at the 9 a.m. ceremony, which will take place on the playground, weather permitting. Be sure to don your walking shoes and pump up your tires because Oct. 26 is also designated Walk/Bike-to-School Day. The congressman might even walk with some of our students to school! -- Robin Schepper, Safe Routes to School Team Leader |
Fall Fair |
Counting Down to Next Weekend In just over a week the Murch Fall Fair will be here: 12-4 p.m., Saturday, October 24, on our beautiful revamped grounds. There will be rides including the thrilling Sandstorm. New this year is the Dunk-a-Hunk Tank (sponsored by College Hunks Hauling Junk). We will also have the ever-popular cake walk, the fabulous used book sale, a bigger flea market, food, treats, crafts, and music. It is always a great day so don't miss it!
The fair's success depends on many helping hands. Here's how you can get involved: Costume Sale: Falling one week before Halloween, the fair is the perfect place to find a great costume and miscellaneous goblin gear. Donate gently used children's costumes, masks, wigs, and other Halloween wear. Also new this year: Halloween yard and house decorations. Please drop off items in Nurse Wright's office. If you have oversized decorations that won't fit neatly into a 3x2x2 foot box, please contact Donna Fabiani or Gayle Hager. Class booths: Sign up to run your class's booth for an hour. Check with your room parents for any still-empty slots.
Flea Market: Rent a table and turn your junk into cash. This year the tables will be in a prominent location between the Kaufman Wing and the main building. With more than 300 Murch families plus alumni and neighbors attending the fair, that's a lot of potential shoppers. Contact: Rachel Garrett.
Used Book Sale: Children's and adult books will be collected Monday through Thursday, Oct. 19-22, by the entrance to the Kaufman wing 8:30 - 9 a.m. and 3:15 - 3:45 p.m. Please, NO magazines, textbooks, self-help books, or outdated travel or reference books. If you have paper grocery bags please save them for the book sale. Contact: Sara Kanach.
Cake Walk and Bake Sale: Donate a cake, pie, a batch of brownies, cookies or other baked goody. Pies and cakes should be in containers that will fit in a cardboard cake box. Package bake sale treats in plastic baggies or plastic wrap for individual sale. Bring items to the teachers lounge the morning of the sale to be priced. Please contact Susan Zentay and Karen Hahn to let them know you are baking for Murch. -- Michelle Cochran and Kathryn Harllee, Fall Fair co-chairs

SOS Campaign |
The Halfway Mark Staff Our School Month is half over -- and we are over halfway to our goal. We have heard from 56% of Murch families and received contributions and pledges of more than $93,000. Before the end of October we hope to hear from ALL Murch families and raise $141,800 to support our instructional staff. Your voluntary, tax-deductible contributions will pay the salaries of three full-time instructional aides, four part-time lunch and recess aides, and a full-time substitute teacher. SOS also provides funds for curriculum enhancement, educational grants, and resource teacher supplies. If you have not done so already, please make an investment in your child's education and send in your completed blue reply form. If you do so before the end of October, you will be entered in a drawing for an iPod Touch. If you have misplaced your packet, you can pick up another from the HSA table next to the school library; download a form or pay online. For more information, contact Julie York.
