"Offer Them Christ": United Hosts Evangelism Week Nov 17-19

William WillimonBishop William Willimon, Bishop of the North Laceye WarnerAlabama Area of the United Methodist Church, and Dr. Laceye Warner, Associate Dean for Academic Formation and Programs at Duke Divinity School, will be featured at United Theological Seminary's Evangelism Week, "Offer Them Christ." The three-day event will be held from Nov. 17-19, and features the Wallace Chappell Lecture at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18.  The lecture, "Witnessing Church: Christian Evangelism in Communities of Faith," will be given by Dr. Warner, and is sponsored by the Foundation for Evangelism.  
     On Tuesday, Nov. 17, United Professor Dr. Jason Vickers will interview Bishop Willimon about his new book, Who Will Be Saved?

UMC Certification Offered at United

     Beginning in January 2010, United will offer two-hour master's credit courses leading to the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry's Professional Certification. Courses are three-day hybrid (both face-to-face and online) intensives in January, June and August each year. Each course in the program, in addition to providing two graduate credits, may be taken for no credit by visiting and auditing students, as well as those seeking GBHEM Paraprofessional Certification, who will come as visiting students. Non-United Methodists are welcome in the classes as well.
     Certification will be offered in Christian Education, Children's Ministry, Music, Older Adult, Spiritual Formation and Youth Ministries.
     A full scope and sequence of courses will be offered so students can plan to take all necessary classes at United (or on-line through United). Rev. Sally Nelson-Olin to Speak at Advent Commencement

Sally Nelson-Olin     The speaker for the 2009 Advent Commencement service is Saranne "Sally" Nelson-Olin, '78, an elder in the East Ohio Annual Conference, and recently retired District Superintendent of the Firelands District (East Ohio).  This year's service will be held on Friday, Dec. 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Precious Blood Catholic Church, 4961 Salem Ave., Dayton, OH.  
     Prior to her appointment as District Superintendent, Rev. Nelson-Olin served churches in Dayton, Savannah, Lorain, Chagrin Falls, Akron, and South Euclid (all in Ohio).  She has also been a school teacher in Columbus Public Schools, and the South Euclid-Lyndhurst City Schools, as well as in American Dependent Schools in London, England.  Sally is married to Gary Olin, '67 and they reside in Lakeside, OH.
 
 

A White Christmas Ball

United's Student Council and Alumni/ae Association are sponsoring a White Christmas Ball on Friday, Dec.11 at the Double Tree Hotel, 11 S. Ludlow, Dayton.  The festivities will include a generous buffet dinner and music by the University of Dayton Jazz Band.
      United students may attend this event at no cost, and for United alumni/ae the cost is $20 per person, payable at the door.  The hotel is also offering a special price for room, $60.  To make reservations for the ball, contact United's reception desk at 937-529-2201.  For hotel reservations, contact the Doubletree at 937-461-4700, and let them know you are part of the United group.
 

Heck Lectures 2010: "Jesus Outside the Bible" 

 
 Dr. Craig Evans Will Lecture April 14
 Craig Evans"Jesus Outside the Bible" is the theme for the 2010 J. Arthur Heck Lectures and Spring Convocation.  Our lecturer is Dr.  Craig Evans, Payzant Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Acadia Divinity College of Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. 
     A graduate of Claremont McKenna College, Evans received his M.Div. from Western Baptist Seminary in Portland, OR, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Claremont Graduate University in southern California. A well-known evangelical scholar throughout the world, he is an elected member of the prestigious SNTS, a society dedicated to New Testament studies. 
      Evans is the author of more than sixty books and hundreds of articles and reviews and is a sought-after lecturer. For more information please visit Craig Evans.
 
 Alumni/ae Banquet is April 13 
     The 2010 Alumni/ae Banquet will be held Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 6 p.m.  Reunion classes to be honored this year include 2000, 1990, 1980, 1970 (Eckles) and 1960. United's Alumni/ae Association is now taking nominations for the Distinguished Alumnus/a Award and the Effective Ministry Award, which are traditionally given at the Alumni/ae Banquet during the Heck Lectures. Phon-a-thon 2009 
     Harold and Norma StockmanThe 2009 Phon-a-thon, held October 6-16, was a success because of great alumni/ae participation.  A big thank-you goes to Harold, '67 and Norma Stockman (right), who volunteered countless hours updating phone numbers and addresses, asking other alums to participate, and making calls.
      As of November 10, alumni/ae have contributed more than $76,000 in gifts and pledges.  Thanks to everyone who helped with this important fund-raising event!
