City and Snowdown officials request snow removal:
All Downtown businesses are reminded to clear all snow from sidewalks in preparation for the Friday night Snowdown parade and attending crowd. Clearing snow from sidewalks is a merchant responsibility. Snow piles along the curbs are unsafe. Please push sidewalk snow from building to curb into the streets for overnight removal by City crews. Everyone thanks you. |
Flying Durango:
Buoyed by a 31% increase in December alone, passenger traffic at the Durango-LaPlataCountyAirport hit a new record of 149,455 passenger enplanements in 2009, a 9.4% increase from 2008. This increase is likely the result of lower fares and the addition of seat capacity by the airlines. United and Frontier offer in excess of 600 seats daily to Denver, and US Airways provides more than 100 seats daily to Phoenix. This is projected to increase in 2010 with the termination of the contract between United and Mesa Airlines. Most of the 37-seat turbo-props operated by Mesa have been replaced by 50-passenger regional jets. |
From the mouths of merchants:
Many are familiar with the complimentary parking tokens presented to customers by some merchants following a purchase...a practice that has become a tradition at Maria's Bookshop. Several merchants expressed concern that this program is dwindling and they would like to see it revived as a Downtown-wide practice. As they note, more important than whether we have a real or perceived parking issue is the potential for a uniform message (via the parking token) that Downtown appreciates every customer's business. |

Performing at a higher level:
Sales can be lost when store clerks speak when they should be listening. Train floor staff to ask questions, but limit their own conversation. Think like the customer and concentrate on what the customer is saying. Don't interrupt the customer, but do interject with an occasional, "Yes" or "I see." Know when to stop talking and close the sale. |
