 Guard Your Password

Most of us today understand what a password is. We need them to get into our email, online banking and most things these days. I had an enlightening experience with one of my passwords this week and I want to share it with you.

My little Bryson loves to play games on my ipad. Now, many games are free but some are not and some are free but you have to purchase things to go along with them. You cannot access or purchase any games without my password. I have had my ipad for over a year and we have never had an issue with it. Bryson always comes and says 'Nana, can I get this game?' he goes on to tell me it is dot 99 or one dot 99, whatever it is. Then he brings me the ipad and if I approve the game, I type in my password.

This very thing happened the other day; he wanted to get a game that was ninety nine cents, so I typed in my password. I generally allow him to spend about $5 and then he can only get free games. That day the game was $.99 or as he would say 'dot ninety nine.' A few minutes later he told me he needed to buy diamonds to play it. I said 'how much?' He said '4 dot 99.' I said 'okay, but you know the rule, after that you have to get free games.' He said 'okay Nana.'

The next time he came to visit he wanted more diamonds, so I said 'here Boo, just type in this password, type .......' He said okay and he typed it in. A week or so later he asked the same thing and I said 'that's fine, just bring it here' and he said 'I remember the password.' So he typed it in. What happened next was enlightening. A few days later I went online to pay my credit card, the one I have set up for my iTunes account. Fortunately I set up a card with a very, very low limit to use for this because it is so easy to get your information when using a credit card online. When I looked, the cost wasn't 4 dot ninety nine, it was 44 dot ninety nine. I immediately thought 'oh my goodness, I am going to get that boy.' As soon as that thought came out my mouth, God spoke to me and said 'why? He is six years old, you gave him your password and you didn't take the time to look at it yourself. All he did was read it wrong, you gave him access.' Oh me. I could hear a lesson coming.

When we give someone a password, we give them access, what happens next is our responsibility, just as the buck stopped with me that day. The word password is defined as a secret word to gain admittance to a place otherwise off limits. It is also defined as a key, a means of gaining entrance to take possession and gain control.

I knew what God was showing me. He was showing me that the enemy has no right or place in our life...unless we give him a password, a key, a means of entering and gaining possession. Let's look at Ephesians 4:23-27.

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we a remembers one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.

God tells us here to give the devil no place, even showing us ways that the enemy will gain entrance in our lives if we allow him to. He can gain entrance through lying, gossip, anger and refusing to get rid of anger. But he also shows us how to avoid this...by the renewing of our mind and putting on the new man, walking in righteousness and true holiness as God created us to.

Another way the enemy will gain entrance is through fear. We draw things to us through our words and actions and if we continually walk in fear about something, that thing will be drawn to us. I often hear stories of people who continually say 'Uncle so and so died of cancer and I probably will to' and then they end up with cancer. Or I hear stories of people who say 'we will never get out of this financial mess' and as they continue to say these words, they continue to struggle financially. The biggest way the enemy gains access is through our words. Matthew 12:37 says by our words we will be justified or condemned. Our words are more important than most people realize. And the first words we speak in crisis will often determine our outcome; those first words certainly reveal what is in your heart.

Remember, a password is a key, a means of gaining entrance to take possession and control. Don't give up your password to the enemy. Give him no way in. Give him no access. Refuse to speak words that are contrary to God's word or what He has said about you. Refuse to continue in anger, bitterness, gossip or sin of any kind. Cut off all access to the enemy today. Don't speak the things that the enemy tries to get you to fear. Speak faith not fear. Speak what you want to happen not what you are afraid will happen. If you are going to draw something to you let it be something good.

Now, for my final lesson today, if you give away your password, what happens next is your responsibility...not God's, not the devils, yours...just as it was with me. Please understand, I am in no way comparing Bryson to the enemy, I am just using what happened as a spiritual example to avoid. Guard your password, guard your entrance, guard your words and no one will have access to what belongs to you but you and God.

I receive God's words and treasure His commandments within me, making my ear attentive to skillful and godly wisdom and inclining and directing my heart and mind to understanding, applying all that I am to the quest for it. Yes, I cry out for insight and raise my voice for understanding. I seek wisdom as for silver and search for skillful and godly wisdom as for hidden treasures; therefore I understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of our God. Proverbs 2:1-5

He who finds wisdom finds life and receives favor from the Lord, I find wisdom. Proverbs 8:35

I hear counsel, receive instruction and accept correction that I may be wise in the time to come.  Proverbs 19:20
