Outlook Dim on National Job Report, Conflicting Info for Connecticut
The National Employment Report, released earlier this month, painted a dim picture. In August, 96,000 jobs were created across the US, and the national unemployment rate dropped to 8.1%. The decrease in the unemployment numbers is attributed to people who have simply given up looking for jobs. Connecticut continues to show both growth and decline simultaneously, making it difficut to get a clear picture.

Interview Question of the Week
Q: How did you prepare for this interview?
Commentary:
A classic case of where the follow up question is almost more important than the lead question. That being said the right answer depends on what you are seeking tied to the role being considered. For the follow up, regardless of the answer, you really need to make the candidate explain their response. Look as well for examples from them to support their assertion, never assuming the response is accurate or honest.

HR Best Practices Tip
Updating Emergency Contact Information
Employees move. Their phone numbers change. The contact info for family members change too. All this change filters down to alter the accuracy of the information you gather from your employees usually at time of hire - information about who to call in case of an emergency. Make it an annual practice to redistribute these forms. If you presently don't utilize such a form put it into your new hire kit now.

Reader Question

Q: Is it OK to allow for an employee to take a sick day when their child is ill, not them?
A: It is your firm's choice as to how to handle sick time and when it can be used. That being said it is not in our view a favorable practice to allow for sick time to be used for anything other than the illness of the employee. The main concern is that sick time will be used up if/when the employee gets sick, leaving the employer with the need to use other PTO or have to potentially deal with extra paid time off or unpaid leave issues. |
