Pay Cuts Imminent for Laid Off Workers

A recent report released by the US Labor Department shows that Americans who were able to secure employment after facing a layoff are being paid less than what their former employers paid. Since 2009, more than half of those laid off took a pay cut in their new positions, and one-third of these faced a reduction in pay of 20% or more. Even more troubling is that those who were only able to find part-time work are not included in these figures.

Interview Question of the Week

Q:  Do you characterize yourself as a risk taker?

Commentary:  A classic case of where the follow up question is almost more important than the lead question. That being said the right answer depends on what you are seeking tied to the role being considered. For the follow up, regardless of the answer, you really need to make the candidate explain their response. Look as well for examples from them to support their assertion, never assuming the response is accurate or honest.

HR Best Practices Tip

Absences & Lateness

Twenty years ago when an employee was not going to be coming in on time or at all their manager for the most part would receive a phone call at the office from the employee. Today we get an email, a text message, even a voicemail....but in many cases no direct contact. Write your policy regarding notification of lateness or absence to include a requirement that the employee call a number where you can be reached so you can speak to the employee. Further, in today's cellular age, it is totally appropriate to request that the late or absent employee make them self available by cell or home phone if you are not reached.

Reader Question

Q: What are the recommended steps to take in an accident investigation?

A: Logically speaking you want to best understand from as many perspectives as is possible exactly what happened. How you go about this and what you ask can be dictated by many factors. For example aside from your own concerns about OSHA and office safety you most likely have an obligation to cover certain areas as directed by your Worker's Compensation carrier. Then you may have an issue that would involve your company's liability insurance, meaning that carrier has questions. With all these factors in mind it's wise to check and see who needs what info before moving into the phase of investigation.
