Interview Question of the Week
Q: How will you go about making your decision if you get more than one job offer?
Commentary: A candidate's priorities will show to some extent in the content of the response you receive to this question. It is therefore one of the best questions we advise an interviewer to employ in their screening process. Given the goal is to get something of value here don't accept a politically correct response with minimal detail or substance. Instead push past that and get the candidate to identify issues like location, compensation, hours, etc. as drivers in their decision making process.

HR Best Practices Tip
Identifying Hiring Needs
As things start to stabilize with the economy and your business you will need to assess where new staff is once again needed. A plan full approach towards this assessment including measuring workloads, hours to complete, pipeline of new business, current business and the likelihood that it will remain are all key steps you need to take into account. Use expansion as well as an opportunity to consider promotions and reassignments towards aligning for future needs. |

Reader Question

Q: How can our firm go about addressing what is considered appropriate company attire without having to list all the specific items and employee can wear?
A: Not easily. A policy statement with details on what is NOT appropriate may be easier to draft than one that describes what is appropriate. Some firms have created posters that show the "do's and don'ts" in terms of dress code. Lastly, in one firm I ran a mock company fashion show. We had several employees dress in proper...and improper work attire. We then dramatically paraded them down a runway of tables in our cafeteria in front of the entire office population, complete with music and photographers, describing the attire as either appropriate....or inappropriate. It was a great event that sent the message we wanted to send....as well as boosted morale and put smiles on a lot of faces. |
