  • Adapting to Culture is Top Concern When Re-Entering The Workforce
    interview

A recent study indicated that nearly one-third, 32%, of workers interviewed said acclimating to a different corporate culture and colleagues would pose the greatest challenge when re-entering the workforce after an extended absence. Other workforce re-entry challenges cited included the following:

    • Learning new technologies/protocols (23%)
    • Adapting to a new routine/schedule (22%)
    • Building professional confidence (10%)

Increased Amount of Wives Outearning Their Husbands

A recent survey revealed that 22% of men made less money than their wives in 2007. In comparison, 4% of husbands earned less than their wives in 1970.. Shifts in education patterns were a factor. In 1970, 28% of husbands had more educationthan their wives. By 2007, that figure dropped to 19%.

    What's on Your Mind?

Because we want to best serve our readers, we feature a segment of our Newsletter where you can submit questions directly to our OperationsInc professionals. Do you have a question related to the management of the Human Resources function? Email it along to enewsletter@operationsinc.com. The best ones will make it into a future newsletter, along with the answer... and those that don't get published will still receive a response.

    This week's question:
-What are the penalties for an OSHA violation?

    --- Project Manager, Construction/Demolition

    Answer:
OSHA has a multitude of penalties tied quite frankly to the extent of the infraction. For most businesses in white collar businesses OSHA is mostly a non-issue, unless you also have a warehouse, storage site, manufacturing facility, to name a few. The best way to hedge against these issues is to contact your insurance broker who usually can arrange for a free audit of your OSHA practices, pointing out the needed fixes.

    INTERVIEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Each Newsletter we will publish an interview question which hiring managers can utilize to better qualify candidates for hire, along with our analysis of the answers you may receive and their meaning.

    This Week's Question
-If you could improve two things about yourself, what would they be?

    GAUGING THEIR RESPONSE ---
This is a great way to ask the weakness question without directly asking it. In short for some candidates it may get you a better, more honest response than just asking them their weaknesses per se. Follow ups on the responses should include asking how committed they are if at all to improving in the areas identified, how they will do it and even if they think they have attempted to address these before (and the results). Expect a good 5-10 minutes discussion from this one.

    HR Best Practices Tips

    --Effective Training Methods
Training these days takes many forms. We have DVDs, CDs, online on-demand sessions, webinars and then good old fashioned live training. The most effective approach by far is the live trainer in that the level of interaction for the students and the trainer can truly impact how effective the session can be. You just wont get that via a webinar and it is typically totally absent with on-demand sessions. Not all training needs to be live, but pick your spots, leaving the most technical of sessions for the live version when possible.
