  • Employee Turnover On The Rise

A recent study indicated that 60% of employees intend to leave and an additional one-in-four are networking and updating their resumes. Since so many workers are unhappy with their jobs - employee turnover is expected to rise this year.

Interpersonal Skills Can Trump Technical Knowledge in Job Search
    Chess

A recent survey revealed that 31% of Chief Financial Officers believe that an applicants' people skills would tip the balance over such attributes as software proficiency and advanced certifications. This is up significantly from 5 years ago when interpersonal skills were cited by only 1% of respondents.

    What's on Your Mind?

Because we want to best serve our readers, we feature a segment of our Newsletter where you can submit questions directly to our OperationsInc professionals. Do you have a question related to the management of the Human Resources function? Email it along to enewsletter@operationsinc.com. The best ones will make it into a future newsletter, along with the answer... and those that don't get published will still receive a response.

    This week's question:
-Must we provide policies and procedures in languages other than English for those employees that dont speak or read English?

    --- CEO - Hedge Fund

    Answer:
In short yes. If you expect to hold these employees accountable for following and adhering to policies and procedures then you need to be sure they have been given the same documentation albeit in their language. Alternative actions could be pursued in the form of verbal briefings, but not without pitfalls. You need to demonstrate that you provided adequate communication frequently enough to ensure that all employees in this category secured the information needed.

    INTERVIEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Each Newsletter we will publish an interview question which hiring managers can utilize to better qualify candidates for hire, along with our analysis of the answers you may receive and their meaning.

    This Week's Question
    - Is there anything else I should know about you?

    GAUGING THEIR RESPONSE ---
This is a good closing question and a bit of a softball to throw out there. That being said you never know what you will get here. Sometimes it is a response geared towards skills and experiences the candidate possesses that you have not discussed. Other times it could be something personal. Regardless any new information you can secure is always going to be helpful. As always you want to probe a bit with at least one follow up question.

    HR Best Practices Tips

    --Addressing Turnover
As the economy comes back to life turnover is going to once again start to happen --- turnover as a result of employees voluntarily leaving to take jobs elsewhere. While this is a time of frustration given the loss of someone you value perhaps, it is also an opportunity to learn a great deal about your operation. Specifically you want to exit interview all departing employees, ideally via a third party, in an effort to learn the most possible about the factors driving people to leave. You then want to determine what steps you can and want to take to address the areas identified.
