This week's question:
-What are the benefits of having prospective
employees complete a job application?
--- Restaurant Manager
Answer:
The job application is one of the most powerful
documents a business can possess in the
employment relationship. It allows the business
owner to collect critical information in writing that can
be used at the time of applying AND even after
someone has been hired. With a compliant and
complete application we learn about job history, wage
history, reasons for leaving, special skills, education,
and even legal aspects like driving record data,
criminal history and eligibility to work in the US. We
also get a release signed off that can serve to cover
everything from background checking to future
termination activity should we learn about any
misrepresentations in the application. In short you
should use these whenever possible.

INTERVIEW QUESTION OF THE
WEEK
Each Newsletter we will publish an interview
question which hiring managers can utilize to better
qualify candidates for hire, along with our analysis of
the answers you may receive and their meaning.
This Week's Question
- Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?
GAUGING THEIR RESPONSE ---
While this is the classic cliché question the
responses really can carry great value as you could
learn about the level of aspirations one has pertaining
to their career. It is important for example to remember
that each candidate is different and may not want to
climb the ladder per se'. In fact it could be okay to
hire someone who sees themselves in the same role
5-10 years out as that may be the perfect employee
who is reliable and a cornerstone for the department..
In short you should ask vs. assume. Lastly don't let
your own personal goals and aggressive upward
goals jade your view of what you get in response to
this question, unless of course you require that same
level of ambition in this candidate.
HR Best Practices Tips
--Preparing for Open Enrollment
We just got our 2010 renewal information and suffice
to say the numbers were more than a bit
overwhelming. Double digit increases. Less for our
money. Ugly. What we are doing is what all
businesses at this time of year should be doing. Talk
to your broker. Explore all options. Look at alternate
plan designs. Find out what the trends are; what other
like businesses are doing. Redefine what is the norm,
what is generous and what is harsh. Trends for
example in the area of consumer driven plans (HRAs,
HSAs) are changing the landscape. Now is the time to
consider these --- or simply give in and as a result be
prepared to pay a lot more .
