    Mature Workers

A recent survey revealed that 28% of mature workers (age 55 and older) who were laid off in the last 12 months found new jobs, the lowest of all age groups. This compares to 71% of those ages 25 to 34. Mature workers are now expanding their job search to include entry-level positions, internships, relocation and other options to secure gainful employment.

    What's on Your Mind?

Because we want to best serve our readers, we feature a segment of our Newsletter where you can submit questions directly to our OperationsInc professionals. Do you have a question related to the management of the Human Resources function? Email it along to enewsletter@operationsinc.com. The best ones will make it into a future newsletter, along with the answer... and those that don't get published will still receive a response.

    This week's question:
"We often put labor law related posters / postings on our company intranet. If we only post them there will we still be in compliance?"

    --- HR Manager, IT Company

    Answer:
The federal government and most state governments have not yet recognized "virtual" postings as meeting the compliance standards. As a result while you can post the information online for your employees to easily view and access you need to still hang those posters in public areas of your office, ideally break rooms, cafeterias, clock-in areas, etc.

    INTERVIEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Each Newsletter we will publish an interview question which hiring managers can utilize to better qualify candidates for hire, along with our analysis of the answers you may receive and their meaning.

    This Week's Question
    - Have you helped increase profit and or sales at your last position? How?

    GAUGING THEIR RESPONSE ---
While this may seem like a question for only those in the sales, marketing and business development sectors it truly is a question for virtually all candidates. The question for those outside the aforementioned areas can lead to answers that demonstrate the candidate's understanding of their contributions, as well as a recognition that all positions in a firm have some impact on the bottom line. How they are able to articulate that is the question. Bottom line - a must question for those in sales related jobs. A great question for those not in those roles.

    HR Best Practices Tips

    --The Pitfalls of Employee Surveys
Securing employee feedback is a desire of most employers. The questions are many in terms of what we want to know and then what we do when we know it. In short if you are going to ask your employees about their opinions and ideas you have to anticipate the possible and probable answers and then have a plan for responding. Asking if they think they have enough time off and then not giving them more when they overwhelmingly say "we don't" takes the positives in surveying and turns them into a disaster. Bottom line - think it all through before you execute.
