This week's question:
"We have employees who drive as part of their job.
Should we require [David Lewis] them to have a
background check done on their driving record?"
--- HR Generalist, Health services
Answer:
Background checks are a great idea, especially when
unemployment is high and fraud by candidates for
employment is equally high. Specifically when it
comes to employees that drive for your firm checking
their driving record is a must. The liability your firm
carries when they get behind the wheel to perform
their job is huge. You need to know if they are prone to
accidents, as well as if they have ever been
irresponsible (e.g. drinking and driving) while behind
the wheel. Be consistent though in this practice,
ensuring all that drive as part of their job get checked.

INTERVIEW QUESTION OF THE
WEEK
Each Newsletter we will publish an interview
question which hiring managers can utilize to better
qualify candidates for hire, along with our analysis of
the answers you may receive and their meaning.
This Week's Question
-- Provide an example of your problem solving
approach?
GAUGING THEIR RESPONSE ---
The open ended nature of this question really creates
a great opportunity to see your candidate in action,
which is key to your assessment of them as a fit.
While you could propose a specific problem to solve it
is almost better to let them come up with the problem
and the solution as many times this will turn into them
describing a past scenario that they faced. Overall you
want to listen and read tone, attitude and focus. Are
they calm or panicked? Are they daunted or
invigorated? Are they complaining about having to
deal or up for the challenge?
HR Best Practices Tips
--Coaching and Feedback
Many of us are working with staff members who were
otherwise not hired for the roles they presently handle,
primarily due to the need to consolidate our
organizations in light of the changing economic
conditions. That has resulted in even a greater need
to provide coaching and feedback to our people. A
style that focuses on counseling, educating and
constructively guiding our team can only help our
success, individually and as a group. Find the time to
sit with your direct reports and counsel them. It's worth
every minute and pays great dividends.
