    This week's question:
"What exactly is Long Term Care and what is the benefit of offering it to our employees?"

--- HR Manager - Manufacturing Company

    Answer:
Long Term Care is a benefit that provides coverage for extended nursing home, assisted living, rehabilitation services and similar or support that follows the initial medical care we typically receive in a hospital. The way it is usually offered is a per month rate for the employee based on their age that, provided they stay enrolled, will never increase and, with this, will give them this insurance for life. Further, many firms offer this benefit for family members including parents, which can be a very attractive benefit. Overall this is an insurance product worth exploring with your broker.

    INTERVIEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Each Newsletter we will publish an interview question which hiring managers can utilize to better qualify candidates for hire, along with our analysis of the answers you may receive and their meaning.

    This Week's Question
--How do you successfully organize and plan your priorities?

    GAUGING THEIR RESPONSE ---
Planning and organization skills are critical for most positions. Here we are seeking examples via this behavioral interview question. Listen for hidden admissions (e.g. "I try to ---", "It's a battle, but ---", "It's been a constant focus ---")which may indicate that while we are getting a direct answer we also are getting an indication that organization and planning is a weakness.

    HR Best Practices Tips

--Giving employees access to employees files
There's a lot of information out there regarding what rights an employee has to see their employee file, some of it conflicting. The reality is that the law differs from state to state. In CT for example you must provide access "upon request" whereas in NY you have no legal obligation to do so. Regardless of the state what is clear is that the company has the right to respond "within a reasonable period of time" to the request vs. being required to produce access immediately. Bottom line - this type of request is always a red flag for possible future litigation and therefore should result in your seeking professional advice as to next steps before proceeding.
