    What's on Your Mind?

Because we want to best serve our readers, we feature a segment of our Newsletter where you can submit questions directly to our OperationsInc professionals. Do you have a question related to the management of the Human Resources function? Email it along to enewsletter@operationsinc.com. The best ones will make it into a future newsletter, along with the answer... and those that don't get published will still receive a response.

    This week's question:
"An employee who has been on leave under FMLA would like to attend our upcoming company picnic. Should I allow her to attend?"

    --- HR Manager, Public Services

    Answer:
In almost all cases this should not be an issue at all. That being said there are some pitfalls and concerns. If the leave involves their own health then it may be a wise precautionary measure to secure a doctor's note allowing them to attend. If the leave is in any way being disputed or challenged or has been unpleasant in some fashion then you should use discretion and know you have the right to ask them to not attend. Overall just think through the issues as you assess your decision.

    INTERVIEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Each Newsletter we will publish an interview question which hiring managers can utilize to better qualify candidates for hire, along with our analysis of the answers you may receive and their meaning.

    This Week's Question
--Describe the most significant written document, report, or presentation that you have completed.

    GAUGING THEIR RESPONSE ---
For candidates who will have to write and/or present as part of their job this is a critical question/answer. Past performance is a direct indicator or future performance. To that end we want to know what they produced, if they had help, the nature of the project, its complexity, and even the nature of the audience. If it was a client or more senior management then we can learn by asking about how they handled the pressure and how they were received, as well as any constructive feedback they were given. Overall the key is to probe on several levels.

    HR Best Practices Tips

--Welcoming new parents back to work
At the point when an employee who was otherwise on Maternity or Paternity leave returns to work it is important for the employer to think through what to say and do. Specifically with each accommodation and instance of offered flexibility (e.g. leaving early, coming in late, etc.) comes some potential issues. Other employees may be resentful. The returning employee may take advantage. In short while being kind, accommodating and appreciative of some of the challenges an new parent is facing, be tactful and considerate of all resulting decisions you make.
