Is the Grass Always Greener in Your Own Business?
My yoga teacher tells a story about a woman who stares out her window and sees her neighbor's dirty clothes hanging in plain view. The neighbor cannot believe that the woman insists on publicly displaying her dirty clothes. One day, the neighbor noticed that the clothes were clean. The neighbor approached the woman's husband and exclaimed, "Your wife's clothes are finally clean." The woman's husband responded, "The clothes were always clean. I just washed our windows."
Well, maybe the grass is dirtier, but this story illustrates how we are quick to judge without gathering all of the facts. We assume that life will be roses if we own our own business.....but here is what you need to think about when going on your own:
-Rent space
-Re-credential yourself under all of the plans as an independent practitioner if you are planning on taking insurance.
-Possibly hire someone to take your phone calls, schedule your patients, check eligibilility, authorize visits, bill, and collect co-pays or full fee
-Obtain your own premise liability insurance and other insurance
-Establish your own phone line
-Create and make sure patients signed your legal forms when they come into see you
-Market your services
Take a self inventory. Are you ready to go on your own? Fall is a great time to assess and re-assess your needs. You can wipe the slate clean at start anew at anytime.
