CONTINUITY OF PRACTICE IS THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

My yoga teacher tells a story about the woman who dug for water. She went from spot to spot, digging on the surface. When she did not find any water, she quickly moved on to the next hole and so on. Had she stayed in one place and dug deeper, she would have eventually hit the water. This story parallels the journey of many individuals in healing their relationship with food. Many individuals hop from one treatment provider or program to the next, so that they don't have to go deep. It is easy. They can blame the treatment provider ("Your program didn't work for me!), and don't believe that they have to take any ownership. Actually, it was them in fact that did not plug in and "work for the program."

Recovery is work. It is a process-a journey. Some treatment providers make it easy to plug in and zone out. They think their way is the only way. Other programs are "threatening" to them and they project their fears onto their clients. Other treatment providers are no-nonsense. They force you to engage into treatment, which makes you feel uncomfortable. When you are uncomfortable, this is when transformation takes place. In transformational yoga, poses are held long and linked with breath. You are encouraged to find your physical edge in order to get to the core of your emotional edge. By peeling back the layers, you can tap into your inner wisdom. When poses-- like situations in life-- are the most challenging, this is when the healing work begins.

The more you get to know yourself, through these challenging situations, you eventually find yourself in the driver's seat. You are no longer looking for someone to hand you a menu plan to solve your struggles. You work through every struggle, as uncomfortable and difficult as it may be, and then feel so much more empowered.

At Reconnect with Food, we actually show you and immerse you in unique ways to connect with food, both spiritually and culturally while learning how you can involve your family, friends or significant others. You learn an entire new meaning and appreciation of food, which we call the "qualitarian" approach.

Individuals who stay with the Reconnect with Food program are committed to forging through the ups and downs. They are an amazing and lovely group. They obtain the wisdom to know when it is time to "check in." They also know when the scope and magnitude of their eating disorder needs continuous or more intensive support. They are loyal and their loyalty, along with comradery, extends to their counterparts who are with them in groups and intensive programs.

So the next time you want to fall back on something that is easy, just notice. Change may be uncomfortable, but examine what more is frustrating- to stay where you are or take the first chisel into that iceberg. And, always remember, continuity of practice is the secret of success.
