The Economy--Stay Close to Your Company's Vision )
Career Roadside Assistance from Jump Start Consulting, LLC

It is easy for a small business owner to panic in this economy and either 1) throw in the towel or 2) start chasing the dollar no matter how nonsensical the project. In these trying times, it is extremely important not to panic. It is very easy to get caught up in the fear perpetuated by the media. Can you stay grounded and give positive energy to your business? Can you continue to put passion and trust in your endeavors knowing that no economic situation is permanent-- highs or lows? With corporate downsizing, this is the best time to create your own job!

Instead of chasing the dollar, let's revisit your company's vision as taught by Jim Collins (author of Good to Great) and Jery I. Porras in their book, Built to Last:

Core Ideology:
A visionary company has a core ideology. Your core ideology gives you, and those inside your company, guidance and inspiration. Your core ideology is a combination of your core values plus core purpose.

Your core values are a small set of general guiding principles that you do not compromise for financial short term gain or short term expediency.

Your core purpose is your company's fundamental reason for existence beyond just making money. The core purpose is a perpetual guiding light, different from your organization's specific goals or business strategies.

Envisioned Future Goals:
Do you have envisioned future goals? This is the next piece of your vision. This is a powerful mechanism to stimulate progress. Your goals should reach out and grab people in the gut. These goals are tangible, energizing and highly focused. No explanation is needed.

Vivid Description:
The last piece of your vision is your vivid description. It ties everything together in a brief paragraph that tells your brief story with a "one"-"two" punch. In a way, it is like an organizational creed.

Below is an example of a complete vision as described above:

CORE IDEOLOGY - Reconnect with Food®

Core Values

  • Innovative and cutting edge eating disorder treatment
  • Authenticity and integrity
  • Relationship building
  • Authenticity and integrity

Core Purpose

To help individuals explore their relationship with food, body image and emotions.

Envisioned Future Goals

To be a renowned leader in the specialty of yoga and eating disorder recovery. To transform the way patients and professionals approach eating disorder healing.

Vivid Description

Reconnect with Food ® was created to fill the gap in the resources for holistic eating disorder recovery programs. It is a systematic, unique and outcome drive program designed to heal your relationship with food using yoga and meditation to discover how your relationship with food parallels every other relationship in your life. We will share our knowledge and wisdom to train other yoga teachers and health care providers to incorporate this wonderful healing gift of yoga and spirituality into other eating disorder programs around the country. Yoga and eating disorder recovery will be well understood and accepted in the holistic and mainstream eating disorder community.

Our grandparents (or great grandparents) survived the great depression in the 1930's. Many of us endured the late 1980's savings and loan crises plus junk bonds that toppled the stock market.

As my yoga teacher says, some of the greatest music was born after the World Wars in this country, signifying that we can definitely find grace under pressure.
