The economy has everyone in a panic. How can you
stay grounded and move forward in your practice
endeavors?
Focus
It is easy for most professionals to try and find a quick
fix money maker rather than keep the focus. A
colleague of mine invited me to get involved in a multi-
level marketing opportunity. When he sent me the e-
mail list of people involved, I saw every high end
mortgage broker, physician and other similar
professional in my neck of the woods on the list. This
opportunity, to me,
screamed, "FEAR!" Work on putting Love and Trust
vs. Fear nd
Doubt out into the universe, so good energy will come
back to you and your business.
Treat your business as a long term
investment
Building your business takes time and persistence. It
may involve trying a few things that don't work before
you hit the mark. Nuture and cultivate your business
as you would any living being. Be patient and allow
things to happen.
Implement high quality customer
relations
Many dietitians rack their brains out to find the latest
and greatest clinical conference. What they don't
realize is that it is often their charisma and their
listening ability is their best skill in helping their client
with behavior change. You don't need to learn, "what
to say" or "how to say it." Most dietitians overtalk. I
see it often enough on the list-serves. Simply holding
the space for your clients--your presence--along with
the exchange of energy is all that is needed.
Create an experience for your client
I have said this before and will say it again. Also, in
going hand-in-hand with above. Teach through
experience vs. theory. Hands on food
experimentation, mindful eating exercises, visuals,
practice, etc. helps client retention of knowledge.
Stop attaining more degrees
My favorite quote, "We are educated far beyond our
intelligence," by Irwin Green is really something to
think about. You don't need an MBA to run a
successful business. Most MBAs come out of school
knowing nothing about business as they never had
real life experience in working in or running a
business! The best business school is the "school of
hard knocks."
Another great resource is, of course, The Jump
Start Business School! The information conveyed
is by someone who grew up in a family business and
truly went through the school of hard knocks! (Yep, that
is me! Beverly Price).
Good luck in the year to come! Good things are
coming our way!
