My yoga teacher told our class about five friends that
we need to keep close at hand to work through
obstacles that life presents. Because many dietitians
either want to start or move forward in their current
private practice, these five keys can be wonderful tools
to help you move past your resistance and gain
confidence.
Awareness. Awareness of what is keeping
you stuck is the first step to moving forward. In my
experience, a mindful meditation practice or allowing
yourself some quiet time is a great way to facilitate
this awareness, as yoga is a mindful practice.
Mindfulness keeps you present and helps you
understand what is holding your back.
Acceptance. With awareness comes
acceptance. Acceptance means surrendering into
your truths and making peace with your decisions. It
is knowing that you have the power to change your
situation and move forward with your goals.
Focus. Moving from employee, to self-
employment and then to entrepreneur requires
commitment and persistence. Keeping the focus,
while minimizing distractions will help you move
forward. Creating your vision, putting your goals down
on paper and developing your business plan can help
you obtain a clear path.
Effort. Along with focus, starting or growing
your business requires effort. When the chips are
down, your effort is required to pick yourself up by the
bootstraps no matter how difficult this seems to be at
a given moment. Effort involves more than just going
through the motions, but being mindful and present in
your building work. Putting yourself in this project
facilitates your experience versus keeping you in a
cycle of intellectualization.
Wisdom. Wisdom involves understanding
life's impermanence. When you accept that any
situation is impermanent, you can move forward in
building your business. Clients may come and go,
your income may fluctuate and you may find that you
are changing your business plan often.
Understanding life's impermanence moves you out of
your victim story helping you accept that obstacles are
our greatest teachers-- this is how we learn and
transform. Your mentors may be your obstacles-
shatter their frame of reference and look inside. You
can approach your business with a brand new outlook
now that you have experienced this information. You
can do this.
