I recently spent a weekend at a "Silent Retreat"
organized by my yoga teacher, Jonny Kest, Center
for Yoga, Birmingham/West Bloomfield, MI. Three
years ago, this was a requirement during my yoga
teacher training, for completion of my yoga teacher
registration/certification. This time, my participation
was voluntary.
I joined 30 other participants (yes, I paid $150 to
meditate in silence for an entire weekend) at a
retreat center not too far from home where,
collectively, we ate, slept and meditated. In
addition, eye contact was not permitted. Also,
writing or reading materials were not allowed.
During the meditation, we were instructed to focus
our attention below the nostrils, above the base of
the upper lip. When our attention drifted, we
simply "started again" and continued to observe our
breath without reaction or judgment during our
meditation.
When the weekend was over, we reconvened in a
circle to discuss our experiences. It was interesting
to hear others describe their experiences. Many
became more attuned to nature when they walked
outdoors during the breaks. Some noticed how
they "let go" of their roles during the meditation--the
roles of mom, dad, employee, business owner, etc.,
while others "let go" of so much baggage they had
been carrying around for a long time. As
participants "emptied their cup," so to speak, they
walked away from the weekend feeling lighter.
As I observe the discussions between us, we
all tend to hold on to so many notions of what is
right or wrong in our practice. We question each
others credibility and throw out what we don't know
to be tried, tested and in the literature.
If we could just let go of the need to ramble on in
discussions, we can learn to become better
listeners. Clients want to be listened to and
understood. When you listen, more than talk, you
can be a facilitator in your clients' change
process.
When you learn the balance of breathing, while
staying firm in your ground vs. reacting to situations
that push your buttons, your businesses can move to
the next level as a clearer picture of our goals come
to focus. You begin to learn that the answers to
those difficult business questions lie within you vs.
having to look externally for the majic formula or
secret.
