What's the Scoop? Cemetery tours are quite popular in Hollywood, New Orleans and Washington DC but have you ever stopped to learn about the history, pioneers and colorful characters behind "The Valley of Heart's Delight?" This Saturday take a stroll with a historian through Calvary Catholic Cemetery to learn interesting facts about our city's founders. Then later the same day you can see someone who is very much alive and kicking. The ever engaging Fr. "G", founder of Homeboy Industries and a nationally renown gang expert will engage you with stories of faith and hope. It's that time of the year for spring cleaning and there is a special need for men's clothing donations. Ladies, this is your excuse to go through all the men in your life's closets and toss out everything you can all in the name of charity. Praise the Lord!

Fr. Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries ~ April 17
| In 1992 Fr Greg Boyle, S.J., was Pastor of Dolores Mission in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles addressing the escalating problems of gang-involved youth when the riots broke out following the Rodney King verdict. Fr. Greg responded by creating Homeboy Bakery with a mission to create an environment that provided training, work experience, and above all, the opportunity for rival gang members to work side by side. He believed that many gang members were eager to leave the dangerous and destructive life on the streets and start a new path. Today, Homeboy Industries located in downtown Los Angeles, is recognized as the largest gang intervention program in the country, and has become a national model which was grown to include Homeboy Bakery, Homeboy Silkscreen, Homeboy Maintenance, Homeboy/Homegirl Merchandise, and Homegirl Café. Come celebrate and support the work of East Side Heroes and hear the dynamic and inspiring words of Fr Greg of Homeboy Industries.

Spring Cleaning for the Soul Campaign ~ Now | Volunteers in the Diocese of San Jose's Detention Ministry are collecting clothing for men ages 18-60 who are leaving incarceration. These men who have now "paid their debt to society" leave with the original clothes they came in with on their back and $100 to start a new life. $100 does not go far when you need a place to stay, clothes, food and something as simple as a toothbrush. Providing them with a change of clothing and grooming products helps them ease back into society and gives them an opportunity to go on job interviews. Most importantly this small gesture shows that someone cares and provides them with hope. Faith and hope are the most powerful catalysts for change.
Spring Cleaning for the Soul Campaign Now - April 30, 2010
