What's the Scoop? The sports world was abuzz when Grant Desme stepped away from a MLB career with the Oakland A's to join the priesthood. Come hear his journey of faith and reaction from others this Thursday. Learn more about the fearless women in the New Testament in an 8 week series starting tomorrow. Don't miss hearing the dynamic words of Fr. Greg Boyle, S. J., a nationally renown gang expert who has changed the lives of multitudes through faith and hard work. Grant Desme in San Jose ~ April 8
Grant Desme was living the dream of every little boy who aspires to be a professional athlete. The Oakland Athletics picked Desme in the second round of the 2007 amateur draft and offered him a six figure signing bonus. He was the only player in the entire minors with 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases last season and was named the most valuable player of the Arizona Fall League. Then he set the sports world abuzz in January when he announced he was leaving the big leagues to join the Catholic priesthood. Many wondered how he could give up the "glam sports life" to join a church filled with controversy. We all know that there are many more men who wish to be a sports star these days than a man of the cloth. Now Desme will return to the Bay Area to respond to these many unanswered questions along with his mentor Monsignor Craig Harrison of the Diocese of Fresno.

Fr. Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries ~ April 17
In 1992 Fr Greg Boyle, S.J., was Pastor of Dolores Mission in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles addressing the escalating problems of gang-involved youth when the riots broke out following the Rodney King verdict. Fr. Greg responded by creating Homeboy Bakery with a mission to create an environment that provided training, work experience, and above all, the opportunity for rival gang members to work side by side. He believed that many gang members were eager to leave the dangerous and destructive life on the streets and start a new path. Today, Homeboy Industries located in downtown Los Angeles, is recognized as the largest gang intervention program in the country, and has become a national model which was grown to include Homeboy Bakery, Homeboy Silkscreen, Homeboy Maintenance, Homeboy/Homegirl Merchandise, and Homegirl Café. Come celebrate and support the work of East Side Heroes and hear the dynamic and inspiring words of Fr Greg of Homeboy Industries.
