What's the Scoop?
30 years ago today on March 24, 1980, Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador had just finished his sermon at a small hospital chapel when he was assassinated by a sniper. The archbishop who witnessed ongoing violations of human rights in San Salvador begged for international intervention. All the Salvadoran bishops turned their backs on him, reporting his efforts to the Vatican stating he had become too "political". He continued on following not the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, but Jesus' teachings. Days before his murder he told a reporter, "You can tell the people that if they succeed in killing me, that I forgive and bless those who do it. Hopefully, they will realize they are wasting their time. A bishop will die, but the church of God, which is the people, will never perish." Come learn more about this beloved pastor from Msgr. Ricardo Urioste, who was the Vicar General when Romero was killed and will recount his life and legacy.

Legacy of Archbishop Romero ~ April 28 & 29

Archbishop Oscar Romero gave his last homily on March 24, 1980 moments before a sharpshooter assasinated him. Romero had stood alone against the oppresion of the doraSalvadorean people. With one exception, all the Salvadoran bishops turned their backs on him. It was then Romero understood the church is more than the hierarchy, Rome, theologians or clerics, he knew that the church is the people. Over 75,00 Salvadorans would be killed, one million would flee the country, another million left homeless and in a country of only 5.5 million one Archbishop would die for his people. Days before his death, Romero said, "You can tell the people that if they succeed in killing me, that I forgive and bless those who do it. Hopefully, they will realize they are wasting their time. A bishop will die, but the church of God, which is the people, will never perish." On the 30th anniversary of Bishop Romero's death, Msgr. Ricardo Urioste, who was the Vicar General when Romero was killed on March 24, 1980 will recount his life and legacy.
