What's the Scoop? During Lent as we fast many of us recall Civil Rights leader, Cesar E. Chavez. Chavez a devout Catholic, went on fasts which would last for up to thirty-six
days only taking water and Holy Communion. This did not provide him with physical strength but gave him the spiritual strength to continue on, as he was filled with the body of Christ. Don't miss the special performance of Let The Eagle Fly - The Story of Cesar Chavez benefiting the Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform on Sunday, March 7th. Speaking of Immigration reform our very own Fr. Jon Pedigo, will receive the Office of Human Relations Director's Award for his work on the latter at their upcoming annual breakfast. And if that's not enough there is an incredible exhibit about the Bracero Program courtesy of the Smithsonian currently running at the Mexican Heritage Plaza and the premiere performance of Henry Mollicone's Misa de Los Imigrantes at Santa Clara Mission. Author Gabriel Thompson will speak about going undercover for a year in the immigrant worker community. And if you can find it in your heart they are collecting monies to bring some farmworker families to San Jose to see the musical production.
Note: There were so many immigration related items this week we checked to see if there was a national immigration day or month we missed and wondered why we've never received a Hallmark card. Mystery solved! There is an official Immigration Awareness Month, but it's in April.

Cesar Chavez Musical ~ March 5 - 31
|
"I find 'Let the Eagle Fly' a first-rate musical drama", says Sheldon Harbick -Tony®, GRAMMY®, and Pulitzer Prize winner for Fiorello! and Fiddle on the Roof, "The book and the score are remarkable, heartfelt, touching and inspired."
Chavez Family Vision debuts "Let The Eagle Fly - The Story of Cesar Chavez" in Silicon Valley in March 2010. This inspirational musical tells the story of Cesar E. Chavez, one of the most influential civil rights leaders of our time and a crusader for non-violent change. It traces Chavez's life from his childhood, as the son of migrant farm workers in the Great Depression, through his founding of the farm workers union and commitment to the non-violent struggle for social and economic justice. Silicon Valley, once an agricultural area known as "The Valley of Heart's Delight" is where Chavez began his community activism. The musical focuses primarily on the five-year grape boycott which brought nationwide attention to the farm workers' plight. For more information visit LetTheEagleFly.com
