What's the Scoop?
doraDuring Lent as we fast many of us recall Civil Rights leader, Cesar E. Chavez. Chavez a devout Catholic, went on fasts which would last for up to thirty-six days only taking water and Holy Communion. This did not provide him with physical strength but gave him the spiritual strength to continue on, as he was filled with the body of Christ. Don't miss the special performance of Let The Eagle Fly - The Story of Cesar Chavez benefiting the Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform on Sunday, March 7th. Speaking of Immigration reform our very own Fr. Jon Pedigo, will receive the Office of Human Relations Director's Award for his work on the latter at their upcoming annual breakfast. And if that's not enough there is an incredible exhibit about the Bracero Program courtesy of the Smithsonian currently running at the Mexican Heritage Plaza and the premiere performance of Henry Mollicone's Misa de Los Imigrantes at Santa Clara Mission. Author Gabriel Thompson will speak about going undercover for a year in the immigrant worker community. And if you can find it in your heart they are collecting monies to bring some farmworker families to San Jose to see the musical production.

Note: There were so many immigration related items this week we checked to see if there was a national immigration day or month we missed and wondered why we've never received a Hallmark card. Mystery solved! There is an official Immigration Awareness Month, but it's in April.

Cesar Chavez Musical ~ March 5 - 31

dora
"I find 'Let the Eagle Fly' a first-rate musical drama", says Sheldon Harbick -Tony®, GRAMMY®, and Pulitzer Prize winner for Fiorello! and Fiddle on the Roof, "The book and the score are remarkable, heartfelt, touching and inspired."

Chavez Family Vision debuts "Let The Eagle Fly - The Story of Cesar Chavez" in Silicon Valley in March 2010. This inspirational musical tells the story of Cesar E. Chavez, one of the most influential civil rights leaders of our time and a crusader for non-violent change. It traces Chavez's life from his childhood, as the son of migrant farm workers in the Great Depression, through his founding of the farm workers union and commitment to the non-violent struggle for social and economic justice. Silicon Valley, once an agricultural area known as "The Valley of Heart's Delight" is where Chavez began his community activism. The musical focuses primarily on the five-year grape boycott which brought nationwide attention to the farm workers' plight.  For more information visit LetTheEagleFly.com

Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program
The Galeria at Mexican Heritage Plaza will host "Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program.  Between 1942 and 1964, an estimated two million Mexican men came to the United States on short-term labor contracts. A little-known chapter of American and Mexican history, the bracero program touched the lives of countless men, women, families, and communities. Both bitter and sweet, the bracero experience tells a story of exploitation but also of opportunity.This bilingual, multimedia, touring exhibition, organized by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, explores the dramatic story of the largest guest worker program in American history. Don't miss this exciting premiere performance of Misa De Los Inmigrantes(Mass of the Immigrants).  This is a very powerful piece of music composed by Henry Mollicone, a lo
cal composer, who has delivered to us his sympathy and care of the plight of all immigrants. Henry Mollicone's unmistakable touch, the Latin rhythms and changing meter of this World Premiere interweaves the elements of the mass in Spanish and the story of Guadalupe, or Lupe, an undocumented person.
Featuring Composer Henry Mollicone,

Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform

Every human being has the right to freedom of movement and of residence with the confines of his own state. When there are just reasons in favor or it, he must be permitted to emigrate to other countries and to take up residence there. The fact that he is a citizen of a particular state does not deprive him of membership in the human family, nor the citizenship in that universal society, the common, world-wide fellowship of women and men.

The Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform's primary objectives are the following:

To create political will for positive immigration reform;

To enact legislative an administrative reforms based on the principles articulated by the bishops; and

To organize Catholic networks to assist qualified immigrants obtain the benefits of the reforms.
