The Power of Observation
(July 30, 2009)

Question:

What is the practical purpose
of being an observer in meditation?

Answer From Kip:

"All stress arises
because you are identified
with your thoughts and emotions.

But it is possible
to experience yourself
beyond the thoughts and emotions.

To witness the thoughts
arising and disappearing
without any involvement.

Thoughts and emotions still arise,
but you no longer are defined by them,
you are watching them.

From this perspective,
you exist as awareness,
not the mind.

And the nature of awareness
is unconditional love, peace and bliss.

You experience bliss,
not for any reason,
but simply because that is
your natural experience
when you rest as awareness.

So practicing observing the thoughts
begins to expand your awareness
from being identified with the thoughts
to being awareness itself.

For you cannot observe a thought
and be identified with it at the same time.

Simply by observation,
the thoughts lose all their power over you
and all stress vanishes.

You are free from the heavy confines of the mind
and all it's conflicts
to rest as pure, weightless awareness.

Blessings,

Kip"

Chapter 3

The Egoic Self

The egoic self is always engaged in seeking. It is seeking more of this or that to add to itself, to make itself feel more complete. This explains the ego's compulsive preoccupation with future.

Whenever you become aware of yourself "living for the next moment," you have already stepped out of that egoic mind pattern, and the possibility of choosing to give your full attention to this moment arises simultaneously.

By giving your full attention to this moment, an intelligence far greater than the egoic mind enters your life.

Words like "awareness" and "space" are stories

We've been using the word awareness to point to who you are beyond thoughts, feelings, states, and experiences. You are an actuality, not a concept. Therefore, the word awareness is merely a pointer. The word is not the thing it describes. We could just as easily use the words opening or space instead of the word awareness. As soon as you think a word captures your essence, there is a tendency to get stuck on the word. There is no word that captures who you are because you are not a concept.

The mind is telling a story of self. This story consists of one thought after another thought. It may be a victim story, a seeker story, a story of being a successful businessman, or a story of being a failure. No matter what the content of your story is, the story is not who you are.

It is easy to become attached to words like awareness or Oneness used in non-duality teachings. These are just little stories. They are ultimately no closer to who you are than any other story. But these words awareness, opening, and space are pointing you out of attachment to thoughts, emotions, states, and experiences. They are pointing to the absence of things. When it is realized that every thought, emotion, state, or experience arises and falls within who you are, the whole movement to define yourself dies. Freedom is revealed.

Once our Alto Major and Nasal Chakras are functioning we trust our own guidance. The astral presences, the input of the ego and the thinking mind, and the many inauthentic guru-type messengers who wander our human plane eager to teach us lessons about personal responsibility no longer mislead us.

How do we activate these two emotional body centers?

  • By knowing they exist.

  • By acknowledging their indispensable place in our energy systems.

  • By spinning.

Time Never Happens

All we have is experience.

The mind is simply the experience of the mind. The body is simply the experience of the body. The world is simply the experience of the world.

We conceptualise a mind, a body and a world that exist outside, separate and independent of experience, that are considered to exist when they are not being experienced. However, such a mind, body and world have never been experienced.

Nor would it be possible to have such an experience because, as soon as it is experienced, it would, by definition, fall within experience and would therefore no longer be outside, separate from or independent of it.

Experiencing is the essential ingredient of the mind, the body and the world, and Consciousness is the essential ingredient of experiencing.

What would the mind, the body and the world look like if experiencing were removed from them?

And what would experiencing look like if Consciousness was removed from it?

Chapter 92

Go Beyond the l-am-the-body Idea

(Continuation...)

Q: Once I watched a mountain-stream flowing between the boulders. At each boulder the commotion was different, according to the shape and size of the boulder. Is not every person a mere commotion over a body, while life is one and eternal?

M: The commotion and the water are not separate. It is the disturbance that makes you aware of water. Consciousness is always of movement, of change. There can be no such thing as changeless consciousness. Changelessness wipes out consciousness immediately. A man deprived of outer or inner sensations blanks out, or goes beyond consciousness and unconsciousness into the birthless and deathless state. Only when spirit and matter come together consciousness is born.

(Jordan highlights or comments on quotes from the teachings above.)

From Nisargadatta (1/4/12):  "Use every incident of the day to remind you that without you as the witness there would be neither animal nor God."

From Michael Brown (1/2/12):  "Our overall energy levels are a direct reflection of the condition of our emotional body."

Jordan:  This is interesting and good to know.
