Techniques to Enter Deep Meditation

"There really is very little
you need to know
about meditation
in order to meditate deeply.

The simplest of meditation techniques
can take you into
very high states of bliss.

Whether it be simply
watching your breath
move in and out of your body,

silently repeating the name of
a Saint, Guru or God
with every breath,

or focusing on your sense
of existing beyond thought.

It is not the technique
which is so important
but rather your focus
with that technique.

Through one pointed focus
on the meditation technique,
you quickly move beyond
your constant mental chatter
into the clarity of awareness itself.

If you focus on an object long enough
without allowing any distraction,
subject and object become one.

You come to the essence
of attention
which is awareness.

While focus is directing your attention
towards an object,

awareness is resting
as attention itself.

So techniques
are easy ways
to bypass the mind
to awareness itself.

If I tell you to be aware,
you could spend the next
thousand years
trying to figure out what that means.

If I tell you to sit down,
close your eyes and watch
your breath,
you could be blissful
within minutes.

Blessings,

Chapter 3

The Egoic Self

When each thought absorbs your attention completely, it means you identify with the voice in your head. Thought then becomes invested with a sense of self. This is the ego, the mind-made "me." That mentally constructed self feels incomplete and precarious. That's why fearing and wanting are its predominant emotions and motivating forces.
When you recognize that there is a voice in your head that pretends to be you and never stops speaking, you are awakening out of your unconscious identification with the stream of thinking. When you notice that voice, you realize that who you are is not the voice-the thinker-but the one who is aware of it.
Knowing yourself as the awareness behind the voice is freedom.

Stuck in emptiness

It is easy to get stuck in the idea of emptiness. As yesterday's reflection stated, Walking around totally identified with emptiness is a dualistic split between form and formlessness. To be totally identified with emptiness means to make a separate identity out
of it.

The realization of non-conceptual awareness reveals your own absence. It reveals that the thought-based, time-bound self you took yourself to be is a total phantom. This is a powerful seeing. It reveals the illusory nature of personal suffering and seeking. But the more the mind subtly buys into the dualistic idea of no self, the more it gets turned into a belief. When your unconscious story, or belief, is I am pure awareness, or I am emptiness, there can be a tendency to deny form and thought.

With even a little taste of what the word awareness is pointing to, the mind can use the idea of non-conceptual awareness to deny concepts, or use the idea of emptiness to deny form. This is not non-duality. It is still dualistic. Words like non-conceptual awareness and emptiness are pointing to a wordless, actual space. That actual space, once it is realized directly, is a doorway into a seeing that even the boundary lines between conceptual and non-conceptual, emptiness and form, and space and objects are illusory.

Just as The Presence Process assists us know the difference between us and our experiences, awakening emotional body awareness assists us know the difference between our behavior and behaviors alien to our intent.

Changeless Presence

(Continuation...)

The transition from deep sleep to dreaming to waking is seamless. In

fact it is not a transition at all. It is presumed to be a transition only

from the point of view of the waking state where a separate entity

seems to transition from one state to another.

However, from the point of view of Consciousness there is no transition, there is simply a flow of changing appearances, and sometimes no appearances at all, in its own ever-present Reality.

That which is deep sleep, timeless Presence, does not disappear in order for the dreaming and waking worlds to appear. It simply remains as it always is and, at the same time, takes the shape of the dreaming and waking worlds.

At no point in this process does a separate entity fall asleep or transition from one state to another.

Nobody falls asleep and nobody wakes up.

When viewed from the perspective of the waking state, deep sleep is a state. When viewed from its own perspective, it is timeless Presence.

Chapter 92

Go Beyond the l-am-the-body Idea

(Continuation...)

Q: Is not life by its very nature repetitive? Will not following life lead to stagnation?

M: By itself life is immensely creative. A seed, in course of time, becomes a forest. The mind is like a forester -- protecting and regulating the immense vital urge of existence.

Q: Seen as the service of life by the mind, the adhi yoga is a perfect democracy. Everyone is engaged in living a life to his best capacity and knowledge, everyone is a disciple of the same Guru.

M: You may say so. It may be so -- potentially. But unless life is loved and trusted, followed with eagerness and zest, it would be fanciful to talk of Yoga, which is a movement in consciousness, awareness in action.

From Nisargadatta (1/4/12):  "Use every incident of the day to remind you that without you as the witness there would be neither animal nor God."

From Michael Brown (1/2/12):  "Our overall energy levels are a direct reflection of the condition of our emotional body."

Jordan:  This is interesting and good to know.
