Techniques to Enter Deep Meditation

"There really is very little
you need to know
about meditation
in order to meditate deeply.

The simplest of meditation techniques
can take you into
very high states of bliss.

Whether it be simply
watching your breath
move in and out of your body,

silently repeating the name of
a Saint, Guru or God
with every breath,

or focusing on your sense
of existing beyond thought.

It is not the technique
which is so important
but rather your focus
with that technique.

Through one pointed focus
on the meditation technique,
you quickly move beyond
your constant mental chatter
into the clarity of awareness itself.

If you focus on an object long enough
without allowing any distraction,
subject and object become one.

You come to the essence
of attention
which is awareness.

While focus is directing your attention
towards an object,

awareness is resting
as attention itself.

So techniques
are easy ways
to bypass the mind
to awareness itself.

If I tell you to be aware,
you could spend the next
thousand years
trying to figure out what that means.

If I tell you to sit down,
close your eyes and watch
your breath,
you could be blissful
within minutes.

Blessings,

Chapter 3

The Egoic Self

When you think or speak about yourself, when you say, "I," what you usually refer to is "me and my story." This is the "I" of your likes and dislikes, fears and desires, the "I" that is never satisfied for long. It is a mind-made sense of who you are, conditioned by the past and seeking to find its fulfillment in the future.

Can you see that this "I" is fleeting, a temporary formation, like a wave pattern on the surface of the water?

Who is it that sees this? Who is it that is aware of the fleetingness of your physical and psychological form? I am. This is the deeper "I" that has nothing to do with past and future.

The traps after the realization of awareness

It takes no time to realize awareness because awareness is timeless. However, even once non-dual awareness is realized, the complete falling away of the sense of being a separate self may not happen all at once.

The conditioning of the separate self has a momentum of its own. There are all sorts of traps that the mind can fall into once timeless awareness is realized. For example, there may be an unconscious attachment in the mind to a particular interpretation of non-duality, a subtle belief that only my interpretation is correct and that all other interpretations are incorrect. The self creates and maintains conflict and division between its fundamentalist interpretation and those that do not agree with that interpretation. Another trap is that the mind can start to believe that a state of pure awareness must be maintained, a state free of concepts. It begins to deny form, deny thought. This state is still dualistic. A subtle identity arises as pure awareness - arrogantly separating itself from all the others lost in thought or stories.

In allowing each of these traps to be seen, awareness self-corrects them all. This allows for a true resting in awareness. This resting is not a fundamentalist position. It is not a dualistic identity. It is awareness appearing as everything - every thought, opinion, emotion, experience, and state. It is genuine Oneness, a living realization characterized by love, humility, peace and inclusiveness.

All our emotional states contain a smell to them; when our Nasal Chakra is not functioning, we cannot smell the lie when someone is attempting to sell us a useless second-hand car. Animals rely on their Nasal Chakra to navigate through situations in which sight and sound are of no use. We are also permitted to experience this. Our Alto Major and Nasal Chakra work in partnership to enable us to perceive what is transpiring, as opposed to what is being portrayed. While our entire energetic system is not flowing intact, our Eye Center remains shut, and if operating, unreliable. The well-being of our Crown Chakra, being our sense of self, if apparent at all, is then bound to be delusional.

Changeless Presence

(Continuation...)

The language of the waking state is based on objects and time and, therefore, when we view dreamless sleep from the point of view of the waking state, we think that it must have lasted for a certain duration, because the mind cannot imagine timelessness.

The mind construes that the time it imagines to be real is an actual experience. It imagines that time is present in the absence of mind, in the absence of itself, and therefore imagines that deep sleep has duration. Deep sleep is therefore considered to be a state.

However, divested of duration, deep sleep is in fact the timeless presence of Consciousness that is beyond, behind and within all states and, although it gives birth to the appearance of time, it is not itself in time.

Our experience is that deep sleep is simply the timeless presence of Consciousness that does not appear or disappear.

Chapter 92

Go Beyond the l-am-the-body Idea

(Continuation...)

Q: Surely, self-surrender has its value.

M: Self-surrender is the surrender of all self-concern. It cannot be done, it happens when you realize your true nature. Verbal self-surrender, even when accompanied by feeling, is of little value and breaks down under stress. At the best it shows an aspiration, not an actual fact.

(Jordan highlights or comments on quotes from the teachings above.)

From Nisargadatta (1/4/12):  "Use every incident of the day to remind you that without you as the witness there would be neither animal nor God."

From Michael Brown (1/2/12):  "Our overall energy levels are a direct reflection of the condition of our emotional body."

Jordan:  This is interesting and good to know.
