Both the cover and the archival photographs throughout were provided by Ramana Ashram. Many of the poems included have appeared in The Mountain Path, the international journal dedicated to Ramana, and also on The Daily Now.

Techniques to Enter Deep Meditation
"There really is very little you need to know about meditation in order to meditate deeply. The simplest of meditation techniques can take you into very high states of bliss. Whether it be simply watching your breath move in and out of your body, silently repeating the name of a Saint, Guru or God with every breath, or focusing on your sense of existing beyond thought. It is not the technique which is so important but rather your focus with that technique. Through one pointed focus on the meditation technique, you quickly move beyond your constant mental chatter into the clarity of awareness itself. If you focus on an object long enough without allowing any distraction, subject and object become one. You come to the essence of attention which is awareness. While focus is directing your attention towards an object, awareness is resting as attention itself. So techniques are easy ways to bypass the mind to awareness itself. If I tell you to be aware, you could spend the next thousand years trying to figure out what that means. If I tell you to sit down, close your eyes and watch your breath, you could be blissful within minutes. January 7th More on confirming awareness Yesterdayís reflection invited you to confirm awareness. If confirming awareness is made into a time-bound practice in which you believe that you are working towards a future moment of awakening, the pointer ìconfirm awarenessî has been misheard. It has been usurped by the dream self (ego) - the thought-based, time-bound me involved in the illusion of seeking. Confirming awareness is not about working towards future awakening. Future is a thought arising in timeless awareness. If the thought arises, ìI am working towards enlightenment,î it's the dream self talking. The pointer confirm awareness is an invitation to realize the timeless space in which everything arises and falls. In that way, awareness is an end in and of itself, not a practice to reach some future end. You are simply noticing what you already are. You are not the dream self that lives in thoughts of past, future, and resistance to this moment. That dream arises in the awareness that is naturally at rest in the present moment. Even if you repeatedly confirm awareness, you are still not engaging in the time-bound practice of seeking if you recognize that awareness itself is timeless. It is the space in which doing, including seeking, arises and falls. Seeking happens only when awareness becomes fixated in that movement. Confirming awareness means noticing what is right here, right now. It means noticing that which never entered the search in the first place.

[The process of falling asleep is not one of a separate entity transitioning through states. It is simply the withdrawal of this projection.]
Due to the fact that we have so closely and exclusively identified Consciousness with the body and the mind, we presume that the absence of the mind and body during the experience of deep sleep implies an absence of Consciousness.
However, that is simply the mind's interpretation of an experience during which it was not present. It is a presumption based on a presumption.
It is a presumption that Consciousness is in Reality exclusively identified with the body and the mind, and this in turn gives rise to another presumption that Consciousness disappears when the body and mind disappear on falling asleep and, by implication, when the body dies.
This is not our experience in the first case and there is no evidence to suggest that it will be our experience in the second.

Q: I attended one of the group meditation sessions, held recently in Bombay, and witnessed the frenzy and self-abandon of the participants. Why do people go for such things?
M: These are all inventions of a restless mind pampering to people in search of sensations. Some of them help the unconscious to disgorge suppressed memories and longings and to that extent they provide relief. But ultimately they leave the practitioner where he was -- or worse.
